Statewide Update

Update On Hurricane Debby Response

Hurricane Debby hit Florida last week, and the state has mobilized an extensive response to support affected communities. Governor DeSantis announced the activation of the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program, which provides $10 million in zero-interest loans to businesses impacted by the hurricane. Small business owners, including sole proprietors, can apply for these short-term loans through September 30th, 2024, by clicking here.

The Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM) has started rapid damage assessments in affected counties and is operating 8 Points of Distribution (PODS) across the state to provide essential supplies. To date, FDEM has deployed over 1.5 million bottles of water, nearly 900,000 shelf-stable meals, and over 17,000 tarps. Approximately 17,000 linemen are working to restore power, with over 680,000 accounts already restored.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) completed preliminary assessments of over 10,000 lane miles of state roads and removed debris from 6,596 miles. Roadways are mostly clear, except for some flooded areas across the state.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has deployed additional personnel and specialized equipment, including high-water vehicles, airboats, and drones, to assist in flood response and recovery. FWC officers are working closely with local emergency operations centers and have been crucial in high-water rescues and damage assessments.

The Florida State Guard (FSG) and the Florida National Guard (FNG) are also actively involved, providing support with logistics, road clearing, and flood control. The National Guard has mobilized over 2,300 guardsmen, cleared over 401 miles of road, and conducted over 154 rescues.

The State Assistance Information Line (SAIL) remains operational at 1-800-342-3557 for residents needing resources.

FWC Celebrates National Shooting Sports Month

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is teaming up with the National Shooting Sports Foundation to celebrate National Shooting Sports Month throughout August. This month-long event encourages participation in shooting sports and emphasizes the importance of firearm safety.

National Shooting Sports Month highlights how target shooters contribute to conservation efforts through excise taxes on archery equipment, firearms, and ammunition, which help fund wildlife management. The FWC invites individuals to visit their supervised ranges and learn from experienced staff.

To celebrate, target shooters can participate in the #RangeChallenge, a series of activities promoting firearm safety, mentorship, and shooting sports awareness. For more details on the annual range challenge, click here.

The FWC manages 11 shooting ranges throughout the state. To find a range near you, click here.

Agency Highlight

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection

This week, we are highlighting the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Established in 1993, DEP is the state’s leading agency for environmental management and stewardship, tasked with protecting Florida’s air, water, and land resources.

Secretary Shawn Hamilton has led the Department of Environmental Protection since 2007. With over 20 years of experience in both the public and private sectors, Secretary Hamilton has effectively guided the department through numerous environmental challenges and initiatives. His leadership has been crucial during events like the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and hurricanes Irma and Michael.

DEP oversees a broad range of environmental programs through three primary areas: Land and Recreation, Regulatory Programs, and Ecosystems Restoration. These programs acquire and protect lands for preservation and recreation, safeguard natural resources, and improve water quality and aquatic resources.

DEP oversees air quality through the implementation of the Clean Air Act and related Florida statutes. The department monitors air quality, issues permits to air pollution sources and coordinates the review and certification for building and operating power plants, transmission lines, and natural gas pipelines. It also promotes sustainable initiatives and other programs to protect air quality.

DEP oversees parks and recreation by managing 175 state parks, trails, and historic sites, covering more than 813,000 acres and 100 miles of white beaches. These parks offer year-round outdoor activities for all ages, such as swimming, diving, birding, fishing, hiking, riding on trails, battle reenactments, Native American festivals, art shows, museums, and lighthouses.

The department provides oversight for the management of more than 12 million acres of state-owned lands, including lakes, rivers, and islands. The department acquires land for preservation, sells surplus state property, and provides mapping and survey services for state-owned lands. It also specializes in geoscience research that guides regulatory and policymaking decisions.

DEP implements state and federal laws related to recycling, pollution prevention, and solid and hazardous waste management. The department is responsible for promoting, monitoring, and reporting on recycling and other waste reduction efforts throughout the state.

The department protects and monitors water quality, sets restoration goals for surface waters, and oversees restoration activities. It implements state laws to protect the quality of Florida’s drinking water, groundwater, rivers, lakes, estuaries, and wetlands; reclaims mined lands; and preserves the state’s beach and dune systems. DEP also assists local governments and other entities by providing funding for drinking water, stormwater, and wastewater projects. It oversees water management districts as they implement water supply and water quality protection programs.

DEP helps residents and businesses comply with environmental regulations through compliance assistance, education, and information. The department offers various newsletters and updates, recognizes environmental stewardship, and provides career and internship opportunities across the state.

The department offers a wide range of career and internship opportunities across the state, including roles in administration, accounting, policy analysis, surveying, and water specialties. The department values the service of veterans and supports hiring returning service members and military spouses.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection plays a crucial role in safeguarding our environment and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources. Through its various programs and dedicated leadership, DEP continues to make significant strides in environmental protection and conservation.

Constituent of the Week

Evan Ernst

This week, we are highlighting Evan Ernst as our Constituent of the Week.

Evan grew up in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where he attended Cocoa Beach High School. While excelling in both academics and soccer, Evan faced a life-altering tragedy in 2007 when his close friend and teammate, Rafe Maccarone, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and passed away while playing soccer. This tragedy deeply affected Evan and the community.

After graduating from high school, Evan attended Florida State University, where he pursued a degree in Business Management, Entrepreneurship, and Marketing. It was during his time at Florida State that he co-founded Who We Play For, transforming his grief into a mission to save lives through affordable heart screenings for young athletes.

Evan later earned a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Nonprofit Leadership Program, graduating with honors. After pursuing his education, he returned to Cocoa Beach to continue serving his community and the state through his role as Executive Director of Who We Play For.

Under Evan’s leadership as Co-Founder and Executive Director, Who We Play For has partnered with schools and communities across the country since 2012, offering ECG screenings to students, regardless of their level of athletics, economic status, or location. The organization has screened hundreds of thousands of students, identified countless life-threatening heart conditions, and saved so many lives.

He has also been a volunteer and speaker for the Serious Fun Children’s Network since 2009. This nonprofit organization is a global community of over 30 camps and programs providing free recreational experiences to children with serious illnesses. These camps offer a supportive environment where children can experience the joys of childhood, despite the challenges of their medical conditions.

Additionally, Evan serves on the Board of Directors for the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast. This nonprofit organization is a community coalition focused on supporting Brevard County through economic development. Evan’s role on the board helps drive economic development in Brevard County, supporting local businesses and fostering growth to ensure a thriving community for all residents.

Evan’s efforts have earned him numerous recognitions, including the 4 Under 40 LEAD Brevard Award, the Central Florida Humanitarian Award, and the Local SCA Advocate Champion Award from Parent Heart Watch.

Senate District 19 thanks Evan for his outstanding work in our community and beyond. His efforts to raise awareness and prevent sudden cardiac death in young athletes are inspiring.

Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse Marks 100 Years of Theater

This year marks a major milestone for the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse as they celebrate their 100th anniversary. Originally opening their doors as the Aladdin Theater on August 18th, 1924, the venue initially showcased silent films. Over time, they evolved into Brevard’s first theater house and earned a reputation as “the showplace of the Indian River Section.”

Through several ownership changes and decades of history, the theater was eventually acquired by the City of Cocoa and rebranded as The Cocoa Village Playhouse. In 1984, the Brevard Community College District Board of Trustees assumed responsibility for the theater, transforming it into a community-centered performing arts venue. This transition led to the formation of a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the Playhouse’s operational success through fundraising and grants.

In 1991, the Playhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and their official name was changed to The Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse, Inc. The venue has since flourished, with programs such as the Stars of Tomorrow youth initiative and a dedicated group of over 600 volunteers who contribute to its productions.

Significant renovations and expansions have been made over the years, including the addition of a Technical Support Annex and extensive upgrades to the auditorium and lobby. In 2011, ownership was returned to the City of Cocoa, which has since partnered with the Playhouse for ongoing improvements.

As a beloved community fixture, the Playhouse continues to serve as a vibrant hub for the performing arts in Cocoa Village, embodying the spirit of “Broadway on Brevard.”

Guardian Program Set to Begin in Brevard Schools for the 2024-2025 Academic Year

Starting in the 2024-2025 academic year, Brevard County Public Schools will implement a new guardian program as part of their initiative to enhance student safety. This program, known as the Sheriff Training On Site Marshal Program (S.T.O.M.P.), is designed to allow selected school staff members to carry firearms on campus after undergoing extensive training.

The guardian program is open to non-classroom staff members who volunteer, are vetted by their school’s principal, and receive comprehensive training and evaluation in partnership with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. This initiative aims to ensure that when parents drop their children off at school, they can feel confident in their children’s safety throughout the day.

Participants in the S.T.O.M.P. program will undergo 176 hours of rigorous training, surpassing the state’s requirement of 140 hours for guardians. This training includes defensive tactics, firearms proficiency, and mental health awareness. The goal is to prepare staff to handle real-life scenarios, such as an active shooter situation, with precision and minimal risk of collateral damage.

Veteran firearm instructor Corporal Jose Centeno, who has 25 years of experience, will lead the training. The program also includes blocks of instruction on how to holster and retain a weapon safely and how to manage situations without resorting to deadly force.

For more information on the S.T.O.M.P. Program, contact the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office at 321-264-5201.

Florida Tech Expands Aviation Training with $1 Million Grant

This week, Florida Tech received a $1 million grant from the Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust Fund, allowing the university to acquire cutting-edge flight simulators and strengthen its renowned flight training programs.

President John Nicklow announced the grant during a ceremony at the Emil Buehler Center for Aviation Research, where Florida Tech also welcomed four new Piper Pilot 100i planes to its fleet. The arrival of the four new Piper Pilot planes completes the University’s goal of having eight planes announced earlier this year.

The Buehler Trust Fund grant will allow Florida Tech to purchase two FRASCA Mentor 242 simulators, which replicate the multi-engine Piper Seminole aircraft, a vital part of the university’s 47-plane fleet. These simulators, equipped with G3 Touch Avionics, will provide students with the opportunity to practice their flying skills in a virtual environment.

Simulators play a crucial role in aviation education, and this investment will ensure that Florida Tech continues to prepare students for successful careers in aviation.

State Senator Debbie Mayfield – Mayfield Minute 8/4/24

Good Morning!

Today we celebrate the birthday of the United States Coast Guard, a distinguished branch of our armed services. The Coast Guard was created on August 4, 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of 10 vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws and to prevent smuggling.

Established by President George Washington and the Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, the Coast Guard’s official history began with the signing of the Tariff Act, which set the foundation for its creation.

Over the years, the Coast Guard has evolved through various names and organizational changes, including its merger with the U.S. Lifesaving Service in 1915. It has been part of different departments, including the Treasury Department, the Department of Transportation, and currently, the Department of Homeland Security.

The Coast Guard’s missions are extensive, including ensuring maritime safety, environmental protection, and law enforcement. Their tireless work also includes combatting illegal activities such as drug smuggling and human trafficking and providing essential support during emergencies and conflicts on the coast.

For more information on the history and missions of the United States Coast Guard, click here.

As we honor this significant day, Senate District 19 extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who have served or are currently serving in the Coast Guard. Your dedication and commitment to protecting our nation and our state is deeply appreciated.

Empowering Communities: Hope Florida Recognizes Top Churches

Last week, the success of the Hope Florida Initiative was highlighted with significant awards to top-performing churches involved in the Hope Florida CarePortal. The top two churches meeting the needs of their community, Spanish River Church and Grace Family Church each received $50,000, while 11 other churches were awarded $25,000 each through the Hope Florida Fund.

The Hope Florida Fund, launched in July 2022 by First Lady Casey DeSantis, is supported by the generosity of the Florida private sector and operates without taxpayer expense. This initiative aims to support local nonprofit organizations through private sector charity, ensuring that resources reach those most in need.

The program utilizes Hope Navigators to guide individuals towards economic independence by fostering collaboration between the private sector, faith-based communities, nonprofits, and government entities. The CarePortal system alerts participating churches to immediate needs in their communities, encouraging them to compete in fulfilling these needs.

Erik Dellenback, the Governor’s Liaison for Faith and Community, emphasized the long-standing commitment of Florida’s faith institutions to serving their communities. He praised the awarded churches for their exceptional contributions through the Hope Florida CarePortal.

Floridians in need of support can connect with Hope Florida by calling the Hope Line at 850-300-HOPE. For more information on how to get your church connected with Hope Florida, click here.

Agency Highlight

The Florida Department of Education

This week, we are highlighting the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), a cornerstone of the state’s educational system.

Established in 1870, the department was originally led by the Superintendent of Public Instruction, a role created under the 1868 Florida Constitution. This position evolved into the Commissioner of Education role in 1968, reflecting the changing responsibilities of the office.

Significant changes in 2003 redefined the position of Commissioner from an elected role to an appointed one, with oversight provided by the newly formed State Board of Education. The board, which includes the Commissioner, is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate.

The Florida Department of Education oversees school districts, state and community colleges, universities, and independent postsecondary institutions throughout Florida. Under the leadership of Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr., the department strives to enhance educational outcomes and ensure a successful educational system.

To support students across the state, the department implements a variety of programs and initiatives. The Division of Career and Adult Education partners with both public and private sectors to deliver high-quality workforce education. Since 2018, this division has awarded over 500,000 workforce certificates and degrees, equipping students with job-specific skills and advancing their careers.

In early childhood education, The Division of Early Learning (DEL) provides essential services to young students. The School Readiness Program, offered by the DEL, provides financial assistance to low-income families for early education and care, ensuring their children are prepared for academic success.

The Voluntary Prekindergarten Program (VPK) prepares 4-year-olds for kindergarten, setting a solid foundation for future learning. Additionally, the Child Care Resource and Referral State Network helps families find quality childcare options that best suit their needs.

The Florida College System (FCS) plays a crucial role as a gateway to higher education, with about 65% of high school graduates starting their postsecondary education at a Florida college. The FCS’s open-door policy allows students at various levels of academic preparedness to access higher education and pursue personal and professional development opportunities.

Additionally, The Florida Division of Blind Services is dedicated to assisting blind and visually impaired Floridians in achieving their goals and living independent lives. Serving individuals from infancy to senior citizens, DBS offers a range of services, including Employer Services, the Braille and Talking Books Library, and the Business Enterprise Program.

Since 2014, Florida has significantly increased its investment in education, allowing the FLDOE to effectively manage budgets and support school districts. This funding has been instrumental in enhancing educational quality and resources for students and educators across the state.

For more information about the FLDOE and its programs, visit their official website by clicking here or by contacting Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr.’s office at 850-245-9663.

Dear Fellow Floridian,

Monday was a dark day for democracy in Latin America as Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro stole another election from the Venezuelan people, again rejecting their calls for freedom and democracy. Sadly, the events leading up to this event started way before this week when the Biden-Harris administration cut a deal with Nicolás Maduro to ease oil sanctions.

Since the Biden-Harris failed deal with dictator Maduro, the regime has grown in strength, our Western Hemisphere has become more dangerous and adversaries like Russia, China, Cuba and Iran are active in Venezuela at the dictator’s invitation.

Maduro’s massive fraud is not the free and fair election we hoped it would be. But it is a clear result of the Biden-Harris failed appeasement that has emboldened Maduro. The result is a dictator who is murdering innocent Venezuelans on the streets and issuing an arrest warrant for María Corina Machado, Edmundo González, and other opposition leaders.

I spoke with María earlier this week and saw the election results. Edmundo González won this election, and after days of calling on the Biden-Harris administration to do so, I’m glad they finally recognized him as president-elect.

This is a significant moment in the Venezuelan people’s fight for freedom and true representative government. As your U.S. Senator, I will continue working alongside the freedom-loving Venezuelan people to bring democracy back to their country and demanding the administration’s weak appeasement policies that got us here are put to an end.

Senator Scott encourages all Floridians to visit his website at www.rickscott.senate.gov/hurricane-preparedness to get prepared today. See the latest on Potential Tropical Cyclone Four from the National Hurricane Center at nhc.noaa.gov or @NHC_Atlantic on Twitter, and from the Florida Division of Emergency Management at floridadisaster.org or @FLSERT on Twitter.

Sen. Rick Scott: Floridians Should Get Prepared TODAY for Potential Impacts of Severe Tropical Weather

Senator Rick Scott received a briefing from National Hurricane Center (NHC) Director Dr. Mike Brennan and released the following statement urging Floridians to stay alert and get prepared as the state monitors the path of Potential Tropical Cyclone Four, which the NHC forecasts to have a 90% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next seven days that could impact Florida starting this weekend.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Tropical storm watches and warnings have now been issued along the Gulf Coast and our state is in the cone of potential impacts from severe tropical weather from Potential Tropical Cyclone Four. I just spoke with National Hurricane Center Director Dr. Mike Brennan and while there is still uncertainty about the track and intensity of this storm system, families should prepare for very heavy rain of 4-8 inches with some areas getting as much as 12 inches of rainfall. That means we could see flooding across the state. Floridians understand just how quickly storms can develop and intensify. Now is the time to make a plan and make sure you’re ready for anything. Remember – NEVER drive into flood waters – turn around, don’t drown. As I always say: we can rebuild a house, but we cannot rebuild a life. I’ll be continuously monitoring this system and urge all Floridians to do the same. Sen. Rick Scott Presses FBI, Secret Service & DHS on Lack of Transparency & Accountability During Hearing on the Assassination Attempt Targeting President Trump

17 days after the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, that resulted in the murder and severe injury of innocent Americans, Senator Rick Scott again demanded accountability and transparency from federal officials during a joint hearing of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and Judiciary Committee. Since the horrific shooting at President Trump’s rally, Senator Scott has repeatedly pressed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) to hold daily public press conferences to share updates with the American people and answer questions about what happened, who is being held accountable, and how we make sure it never happens again.

Senator Rick Scott said, “More than two weeks after the attempted assassination of President Trump, murder of Corey Comperatore, and the severe injury of other innocent and patriotic Americans, the DHS, FBI and USSS have totally failed to deliver the accountability and transparency that this historic and horrific security failure demands. There hasn’t been a single public press conference to answer the American people’s questions, which has caused rumors and speculation about that day to run wild. FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, which the U.S. Secret Service is part of, are facing an unprecedented crisis of integrity. We have seen failure after failure, and there is never any accountability or transparency from the Biden-Harris administration. Nobody is ever fired and the American people are tired of the total incompetence of this administration. During last week’s briefing, I asked if DHS and the FBI would commit to holding daily press conferences on this investigation and I was told that that was a decision that agency leadership needed to make. We need to see that commitment made publicly today if the FBI, DHS and USSS have any intention of rebuilding the credibility that they have lost with the American people.”

Sen. Rick Scott Calls on Biden-Harris Admin to Reimpose Sanctions on Maduro Ahead of Venezuelan Elections

Senator Rick Scott released the below statement ahead of Venezuela’s presidential election this Sunday. Ahead of the election, the regime of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro disqualified the leading opposition candidate, María Corina Machado, from participating in the upcoming presidential elections. Over the last few months, members of Machado’s team have been targeted and even arrested by Maduro’s thugs. Since the Biden-Harris administration took office, it has repeatedly taken actions to appease murderous dictators like Maduro and failed to stand up for freedom and democracy in Venezuela and throughout Latin America.

Senator Rick Scott said, “If given the opportunity for a truly fair and free election, I believe the people of Venezuela will choose to vote for the future of their country and reject the murderous dictator Nicolás Maduro this Sunday. For too long, Nicolás Maduro and his thugs have deprived the Venezuelan people of this choice by attacking his political opponents, using violence and threats in a desperate attempt to hold onto power over a people that hate him.

“This election must be different. Maduro MUST allow the Venezuelan people to finally exercise their right to vote in a free and fair election. President Biden and Vice President Harris have shown nothing but weakness and appeasement toward Maduro and that has fueled his oppression of the Venezuelan people. The Biden-Harris administration must immediately reimpose the sanctions it lifted without any assurances from this murderous regime, and call on Maduro to allow a peaceful transfer of power when a true leader is chosen. The Biden-Harris administration appeasement of Maduro has clearly failed and must end now. We cannot waste this opportunity to advance our fight for democracy in Venezuela. This is a significant moment in the Venezuelan people’s fight for freedom and true representative government. I will continue working alongside the freedom-loving Venezuelan people to bring democracy back to their country.”

Sen. Rick Scott Joins Sen. Marco Rubio & Colleagues Slamming Dictator Nicolas Maduro Stealing Presidential Election

Following the Venezuelan presidential election that was neither free nor fair, Senator Rick Scott joined Senator Marco Rubio and Senators Bill Cassidy, John Kennedy, Michael Bennet, Peter Welch, Pete Ricketts, John Cornyn, Tim Scott and Representatives Carlos Giménez, Jenniffer González-Colón, María Elvira Salazar, Ruben Gallego, Chris Smith and Mario Díaz-Balart in a joint statement following the criminal and illegitimate Maduro narco-regime claiming victory in this sham presidential election.

Additionally, earlier this afternoon, Senator Scott sent a letter to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris urging their administration to express unwavering support for Venezuelans in the fight for freedom in the aftermath of dictator Nicolás Maduro’s corrupt attempt to maintain power following Sunday’s election. Senator Scott has repeatedly slammed Biden-Harris sanctions relief that has benefitted the Maduro regime in exchange for a false promise for free and fair elections. Since the agreement was not met, Senator Scott is demanding the Biden-Harris administration own up to its mistakes and immediately reimpose sanctions on Maduro and his thugs.

The members wrote, “To no one’s surprise, dictator Nicolás Maduro has once again stolen a presidential election. However, what the narco-regime will never steal is the Venezuelan people’s desire to return to democracy and live in freedom after decades of tyranny. We must prioritize uniting the free world in rejecting these sham election results and securing the release of the more than 300 Venezuelans that remain arbitrarily detained in torture centers as political prisoners. The Maduro dictatorship is experiencing an internal fracture, and members of the dictatorship know their status quo, which is filled with incompetence, is no longer sustainable. There is massive discontent in the streets of Venezuela, and everyday citizens have stood in support of opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez. Let there be no doubt: the countries and international organizations backing this fraud of unimaginable proportions must be held accountable, as should members of the narco-regime and its ‘National Electoral Council’.”

Sen. Rick Scott Speaks with María Corina Machado, Urges Biden-Harris Administration to Recognize Edmundo González as President-Elect of Venezuela at OAS Meeting

Nine days after the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump and with numerous questions still unanswered, Senator Rick Scott reiterated his call for the Biden-Harris administration, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), United States Secret Service (USSS), and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), to hold a daily public press conference to share updates with the American people and answer questions about what happened, who is being held accountable, and how we make sure it never happens again.

Senator Rick Scott said, “It has been over a week since the assassination attempt on President Trump and we still do not have any answers. That is unacceptable. USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle must resign TODAY. The American people deserve answers and I am demanding daily updates from the Biden-Harris administration and accountability for its massive failure. I am very grateful for the Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line following the shooting to protect President Trump. They are heroes, but the leadership at DHS and USSS clearly failed. As I said on Saturday, the security of our Republic is being questioned. The Biden-Harris administration can’t wait until the investigation is complete to release details. I will continue reiterating my calls for transparency and accountability from this administration. It needs to start today.”

Sens. Rick Scott, Mark Warner Lead Bill to Crack Down on Chinese-Made Drones in the U.S.

Senator Rick Scott announced the introduction of the bipartisan Countering CCP Drones and Supporting Drones for Law Enforcement Act with Senator Mark Warner, Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. The Countering CCP Drones and Supporting Drones for Law Enforcement Act would blacklist dangerous Chinese drone companies Da-Jiang Innovations (DJI) Technologies, Autel Robotics, and other CCP-linked drone industry participants and cut them off from U.S. telecommunication infrastructure by including these companies on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Covered List, which identifies telecommunication equipment that poses an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States. The legislation also creates a short-term Department of Transportation grant program, specifically designed for first responders, to replace any existing Chinese drones and purchase American-made ones. Senators Scott and Warner also filed this legislation as an amendment to the FY2025 National Defense Authorization Act.

Senator Scott has been leading efforts in the Senate to counter People’s Republic of China-made technology that can harm national security—especially drones. Communist China funds technology, like drones made by companies like DJI, with the capability to spy on Americans, steal their data and gather sensitive information. Senator Scott successfully fought to include his and Senator Warner’s American Security Drone Act in the FY2024 NDAA to ban the United States Government from purchasing drones made by Chinese companies, like DJI, which was signed into law by President Biden last year.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Drones made in Communist China pose a significant threat to our freedoms and security and cannot be allowed to continue operating in American skies. Companies based in Communist China are at the will of Xi’s evil regime, meaning one of the United States’ greatest adversaries has total access to every bit of data collected by devices. It should terrify every single American that the Chinese Communist Party, known for spying, stealing and espionage, could have access to footage of Americans, their land, their businesses and their families without their knowledge. I was glad to successfully pass my and Senator Warner’s American Security Drone Act to stop the use of drones made by companies in adversarial nations, like Communist China’s DJI, in the United States Government and military, which is critical to protecting our national security. Now, we must pass the Countering CCP Drones and Supporting Drones for Law Enforcement Act as a necessary next step to eliminate the threats we face from Communist China and further protect the security of the United States and every American family.”

Sen. Rick Scott Joins Sen. Marco Rubio to Introduce Bill Protecting America’s Strategic Maritime Ports from Communist China

In an effort to stop the threat of the Chinese Communist Party from expanding and establishing its global maritime network, Senators Rick Scott, Marco Rubio and Mark Kelly introduced the Strategic Ports Reporting Act that would require the U.S. Department of Defense to draft an interagency strategy report to proactively counter this growing threat. Currently, multiple Chinese companies possess ownership shares to key ports in the U.S. and around the world. This investment is a significant risk to our national security interests and to America’s access to trade, global supply chains, and overall maneuverability in the maritime domain.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Protecting the ports, seaports and infrastructure of the U.S., our allies and trading partners around the globe is critical to our economic independence, U.S. national security and the security of our allies. As our nation faces threats from adversaries around the world and Communist China continues its quest for global dominance, we must eliminate any ownership, influence, or access the Communist Chinese regime may have over our allies’ infrastructure and data that can be used against us. Our bill requires the Department of Defense to identify our most critical ports worldwide to ensure continued U.S. trade and military operations and develop a plan to keep them secure from our enemies. This overdue action is essential to protecting American trade and security.”

Sen. Rick Scott to Chair Powell: Fed’s Failure to Meet Balance Sheet Reduction Goals Shows Unacceptable Lack of Accountability

Ahead of this week’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, Senator Rick Scott sent a letter to Chair of the Federal Reserve, Jay Powell, urging accountability regarding his massive failure to meet his target of reducing the Fed’s balance sheet and severely misallocating capital. Senator Scott has been adamant about holding the Fed accountable to their goals of reducing the balance sheet since his election to the Senate. During Powell’s time as Chair, he has overseen a wildly unaccountable Fed, which has grossly mismanaged U.S. monetary policy and grown its balance sheet to an unsustainable $7.2 TRILLION, hurting millions of hardworking American families with skyrocketing interest rates and inflation and losing over $2 TRILLION of taxpayer money in the past two years.

Sen. Rick Scott Slams Chuck Schumer for Delaying NDAA, Ignoring National Security Threats

Senator Rick Scott, member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) and ranking member of the SASC Personnel Subcommittee, spoke on the Senate floor slamming Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for delaying consideration of the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Senator Scott is fighting to secure major wins for Florida, the military and the national security community, yet Leader Schumer is refusing to advance this critical bill to set the policy and authorize funding levels for America’s armed forces. Senator Scott reiterates that America cannot afford to send any signal of weakness at this time of growing threats and instability around the globe and is requesting a vote on the NDAA, which has been passed out of its committee, today.

Sen. Rick Scott Slams Biden-Harris Jobs Report, Shares Weekly Update on Harris Price Hikes

Following the release of the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ abysmal July jobs report showing the unemployment rate rise to 4.3%, Senator Rick Scott released the following statement and a weekly update on his actions to address America’s debt crisis, rising inflation and failing economy caused by the Biden-Harris administration’s reckless and radical agenda. The July report shows that job creation is much lower than expected, and multiple jobs holders increased by 311,000, over the last year, highlighting the dark reality that more people are taking on multiple jobs to make ends meet. The report also shows that the June jobs report has been revised down by 27,000 jobs.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Growing up, my family had very little and we lived in public housing. I watched my parents struggle to find and keep jobs and saw how hard that made it for them to keep food on the table. It makes me furious that the Biden-Harris administration’s radical agenda is forcing that same hardship on families all across our country as unemployment rises, more than 450,000 full-time jobs have disappeared in the last year and 514,000 more Americans than at this time last year are working part-time jobs just to survive. This jobs report would be terrible even without the record inflation Biden and Harris have caused, but with Harris Price Hikes sending costs up 20% since January 2021, too many families are running out of money and options and seniors are having to come out of retirement to keep their homes.

“Under Democrat rule in Washington, our country has lost its way and chosen to incentivize people not to work – and now 100 million adults aren’t in the labor force. If we want to rescue America from this nightmare of fewer jobs, skyrocketing inflation and now $35 TRILLION of debt, we need every American who is able to work to get back in the workforce. I am always optimistic about our future, but we can only fix this if we force a sea change in Washington that brings fiscal sanity and commonsense back to our government.”

Sen. Rick Scott Joins Sen. Marco Rubio to Introduce Resolution Recognizing Edmundo González as Venezuela’s President-Elect

Senator Rick Scott joined Senators Marco Rubio, Dick Durbin, Tim Kaine, Bill Cassidy and Michael Bennet to introduce a resolution recognizing Edmundo González as the President-elect of Venezuela. This year’s presidential election in Venezuela was seen as a beacon of hope as the Venezuelan people casted their vote amid tyranny. Despite the Maduro regime’s continued attempt to maintain its illegitimate grip on power, the Venezuelan people voted, in a landslide, for Edmundo González Urrutia.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Evil dictator, Nicolas Maduro, emboldened by the appeasement of the Biden-Harris administration, is attempting to steal yet another election from the people of Venezuela, meeting their calls for freedom with oppression and violence. Democracy in Venezuela is at stake and the security of our hemisphere is in danger. The United States cannot be silent or complicit in Maduro’s tyranny. The Venezuelan people have made their voices heard when they chose Edmundo González as their rightful leader and now the United States, and every freedom-loving nation, must stand with them.”
