US Senator Rick Scott’s Week in Review 08/24/24

Dear Fellow Floridian,

The United States must always be a beacon of freedom, democracy and human rights. That’s why, this week, I led my colleagues, Senators Tom Cotton, Joni Ernst, Marco Rubio and Markwayne Mullin, in a letter to President Biden urging him to deny evil dictators from Iran, Cuba and Venezuela entry into the U.S. for next month’s United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York. These dictators have oppressed their people, violated human rights and fueled terror. The UN General Assembly cannot be used as a stage for them to gain credibility and promote their dangerous views that pose significant threats to the national security of the United States and our allies.

I was also alarmed by recent reports that the Biden-Harris administration allowed a high-level, longtime Cuban Communist Party operative to gain U.S. entry. I joined Senator Marco Rubio and Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart, María Elvira Salazar and Carlos A. Giménez in sending a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas condemning these reports and demanding answers on how this was allowed in the first place, and what specific processes are in place to ensure that a similar mistake does not recur. Absolutely no one who played a role in oppressing the Cuban people for decades and threatening our national security should be allowed into our free nation.

The Biden-Harris administration must take a stand against these evil regimes. Weak appeasement and turning a blind eye to our enemies and adversaries won’t work. We’ve seen proof of that over the last three and a half years. We must stand on the side of freedom and human rights, protect our national security and stop enabling evil dictators who hate the American way of life.

Senator Scott is encouraging the state to also have substantial public comment periods, each attended by the ARC, for communities affected by this proposal to fully understand its potential impacts. The Senator welcomes the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s announcement of additional public comment opportunities following his request and will continue his push to make Floridians’ voices heard.

Sen. Rick Scott Joins Sen. Jim Risch in Bipartisan VALOR Act to Promote Democracy in Venezuela

Senator Rick Scott joined Senators Jim Risch, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Michael Bennet, Bill Cassidy and Bill Hagerty in announcing the Venezuela Advancing Liberty, Opportunity, and Rights Act (VALOR Act). This legislation would establish U.S. policy in support of a transition to democratic order in Venezuela. The bill will be led in the House by U.S. Representatives Maria Salazar and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Senator Rick Scott said, “For years, I have urged President Biden and Vice President Harris to put the full weight of the federal government behind the Venezuelan people’s fight for democracy through free and fair elections, and at every turn the Biden-Harris administration has chosen to stand with Maduro by easing sanctions and failing to recognize Edmundo González Urrutia as the president-elect. The time is now for Maduro to leave office and allow the Venezuelan people to be free from his dictatorship. The United States must be a leader in bringing freedom and democracy to Venezuela and the VALOR Act is a step in the right direction.”

Sen. Rick Scott Slams Federal Reserve Chair Powell’s Failures

Ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell’s speech at Jackson Hole tomorrow, Senator Rick Scott released the below statement slamming Chair Powell’s refusal to represent the best interests of American families and massive failure to meet any targets for reducing the Fed’s balance sheet. As Fed Chair, Powell has overseen a wildly unaccountable Fed, which has grossly mismanaged U.S. monetary policy, grown its balance sheet to an unsustainable $7.14 TRILLION which he has refused to explain despite Senator Scott’s urging for years, and has failed to provide stability for American families with skyrocketing interest rates and inflation.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Fed Chair Jay Powell is tasked with overseeing one of the largest financial institutions in the world that is supposed to make decisions in the best interests of American families and businesses – and he’s failing. One of the main objectives of the Fed is to provide price stability for American families, but everything Jay Powell does provides instability and hardship for them. He’s allowed rates to skyrocket and inflation to soar. He’s severely misallocated capital and lost TRILLIONS in taxpayer money. And while Chair Powell promised to pay down the massive $7.14 trillion balance sheet, he hasn’t reached a single self-established goal to do so. It’s an obvious, unacceptable failure. We cannot allow Jay Powell and the Fed’s failures to bring more suffering to families and our economy, and I’ll keep fighting to hold the Fed accountable and make sure its policies are truly serving the American people.”

Commissioner Simpson Announces Natural Disaster Recovery Loan Program for Farmers

Last week, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson announced that Florida farmers, ranchers, and growers affected by Hurricane Debby are now eligible to apply for low-interest or interest-free loans through the Agriculture and Aquaculture Producers Natural Disaster Recovery Loan Program. Loans up to $500,000 are designed to help producers restore, repair, or replace essential property such as fences, equipment, and greenhouses, or to remove vegetative debris.

“Supporting our farmers, ranchers, and growers in the aftermath of a natural disaster is not just about rebuilding and replanting, it’s about safeguarding our state and nation’s food security,” stated Commissioner Simpson. Farmers, ranchers, and growers are advised to document any property damage with photos and retain receipts for recovery-related expenses.

Producers that were previously awarded funds for Hurricane Idalia can also apply for funds to repair damages from Hurricane Debby. As a reminder, applications for damages from Hurricane Idalia will close August 29th, 2024.

This initiative follows the passage of House Bill 1-C during the November 2023 legislative session, which allocated $75 million to support recovery efforts for impacted agriculture and aquaculture sectors.

In 2023, Florida welcomed more than 140 million visitors, breaking the previous year’s records.

Agency Highlight

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

This week, we are highlighting the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), an agency with a rich history and a vital role in supporting Florida’s agriculture and protecting its consumers.

The FDACS was founded in 1868, when the Florida Constitution established the Office of Commissioner of Immigration, tasked with attracting settlers to the state. By 1885, it was renamed the Commissioner of Agriculture, reflecting the changing responsibilities of the office. In 1969, the Florida Legislature reorganized the department, adding the Division of Consumer Services and the Division of Forestry, and renaming it to include its new responsibilities as the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The FDACS is currently led by Commissioner Wilton Simpson, Florida’s 13th Commissioner of Agriculture. A fifth-generation Floridian and lifelong farmer, Commissioner Simpson has deep roots in agriculture. His leadership is marked by a strong commitment to supporting Florida’s farmers, promoting Florida-grown food, and addressing agriculture as a national security issue. His extensive legislative experience, including his term as Senate President, has been crucial in securing significant funding and protections for the agricultural sector.

The FDACS oversees a range of divisions, essential to its mission. They work together to protect Florida’s environment, agriculture, and consumers.

FDACS’s work is supported by a range of specialized divisions, including:

Dear Fellow Floridian,

Today, Vice President Harris, a person who — unlike so many hardworking Floridians — has never built a business, doesn’t understand profit and loss, has never met payrolls, and who has never competed in a consumer market, is going to propose federal price controls. That should terrify every American.

She claims that Congress needs to ban ‘price gouging,’ which is already widely illegal and not the cause of high prices. The skyrocketing prices created by the Biden-Harris administration aren’t price-gouging, it’s inflation. Her solution to the Harris Price Hikes she caused is big government on steroids—where Washington bureaucrats stick their hands into American businesses and say what they can and can’t sell a product for. It never works because it causes companies to make much less of something—destroying supply and causing a mass shortage of goods. One day in a middle school economics class would teach her those basic principles. Unfortunately, it’s not surprising to see such a dangerous and clearly flawed proposal come from a career politician who has never run a business. Lucky for her, I put out a quarterly Economic Snapshot that exposes the truth about the Biden-Harris economy. Click HERE or below to see for yourself.

Image

Getting inflation under control will happen when the federal government stops recklessly spending money it doesn’t have, and we finally beat back the destructive war that the Biden-Harris administration has waged on U.S. energy, which has made the cost of everything go up. That’s why I fight every day to get these things done and Make Washington Work for YOU, not put more power in the hands of big government.

Sen. Rick Scott Demands Biden-Harris Admin Stand with Venezuela President-Elect, Calls for Sanctions Under Maduro Rule

After President Biden made comments that he supports a new election in Venezuela, Senator Rick Scott sent a letter to President Biden requesting the Biden-Harris administration to put the full weight of the federal government behind the Venezuelan people’s fight for democracy and to stand with opposition leader María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia as president-elect. Senator Scott is also requesting the administration take action to reimpose sanctions if Maduro is to remain in power and send a strong message to show America’s solidarity with the Venezuelan people in their fight for free and fair elections.

Sen. Rick Scott Backs Bipartisan Bill to Ensure Public Employees Receive Full Social Security Benefits

Senator Rick Scott joined bipartisan legislation, led by Senators Susan Collins and Sherrod Brown, that would ensure public sector workers and their families can receive full Social Security benefits after two previous statutes reduced them. The Social Security Fairness Act would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) from the Social Security Act, ensuring public sector workers and their families receive their full Social Security benefits.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Folks preparing for retirement shouldn’t be caught in a game of ‘gotcha’ with the federal government. If you pay into Social Security, you ought to receive full Social Security benefits in retirement. I am proud to join my colleagues in this bipartisan legislation that will protect public sector employees, like teachers, firefighters and law enforcement, to ensure they aren’t punished for their service and rightly receive the full benefits they deserve for serving their communities so well. Our public sector employees do so much to ensure that Florida is the best state to live, work and raise a family, and they are entitled to the benefits they have paid into and earned.”

Sen. Rick Scott Demands Accountability Following Massive Hack of Americans’ Social Security Numbers & Personal Data

Senator Rick Scott released the following statement demanding action and accountability from the Biden-Harris administration following reporting from the Los Angeles Times that a massive security breach, conducted four months ago, has potentially stolen the Social Security numbers and other sensitive information of every American citizen.

Senator Rick Scott said, “It is disturbing and unacceptable that Americans are just now learning of this massive hack, which allowed criminal hackers to gain access to and now offer for sale approximately 2.9 billion records, which the Los Angeles Times reports include, ‘the full names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and phone numbers, along with alternate names and birth dates,’ of American citizens. While we learn more about this breach, the Biden-Harris administration must detail what is being done to hold the contractor that was holding this data, National Public Data, accountable for its failure to protect against this hack. The American people also deserve to know what is being done to recover this data, and how the administration is going to protect them and ensure that a security breach of this magnitude never happens again. It is absolutely critical that threats such as this hack are dealt with swiftly and not allowed to become yet another source of concern and anxiety for hardworking American families.”

Sen. Rick Scott & Sen. Marco Rubio Introduce Resolution Condemning Cuban Regime

While the illegitimate Cuban regime, just 90 miles off of Florida’s coast, continues its attempts to threaten stability and security in the Western Hemisphere and carry out heinous crimes against its citizens, Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio announced the introduction of their resolution calling for accountability. The illegitimate Cuban regime has made Cuba a safe haven for Communist China, Russia, Iran, and Venezuela and the United States must continue to defend democracy and the rights of the Cuban people. Representative María Elvira Salazar introduced a companion resolution in the House.

Senator Rick Scott said, “The illegitimate Communist Cuban regime is a destabilizing force in the Western Hemisphere, a safe harbor to terrorists, a friend to America’s enemies, an oppressor of the Cuban people and violator of human rights. Sadly, that hasn’t stopped the Biden-Harris administration from chasing the same weak appeasement policies prioritized by Obama for this State Sponsor of Terrorism, which have done nothing but strengthen the Castro/Díaz-Canel regime. As we speak, Cuban military thugs are being used to prop up puppets like Maduro and repress the Venezuelan people. The United States must take a stand, and I’m proud to join my colleagues in this resolution to make clear we will NOT condone the illegitimate communist Cuban regime’s human rights abuses and will use the full force of our government to hold them accountable. I stand with the brave Cuban people and will never forget their fight.”

Sen. Rick Scott on PPI Report: The Biden-Harris Administration has Failed the American People

Senator Rick Scott released the below statement following the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) highlighting the need to implement substantive fiscal reforms to end the ongoing inflation crisis fueled by the Biden-Harris administration’s reckless tax-and-spend agenda. July’s PPI data shows that there has been a significant rise in inflation during the Biden-Harris administration, with a 2.2 percent year-over-year increase in July. Since President Biden and Vice President Harris took office, PPI inflation is up 20 percent.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Biden-Harris Price Hikes continue to increase prices of goods and services, making it harder for small businesses and families to make ends meet. Every increase in costs is a burden for small businesses and when these folks face the historic inflation caused by Biden-Harris Price Hikes, those skyrocketing costs can quickly force them under. Under the failure of Bidenomics and the resulting Biden-Harris Price Hikes, the American Dream is growing further out of reach while families are having to choose which bills to pay this month and whether they can afford new school supplies for their children. Fighting inflation is about protecting opportunity and the chance for every family, even one like mine growing up that lived in public housing, to work hard and achieve their dreams. We can make Washington work for Florida families, and that starts with ending the reckless spending that is spiraling our country and too many American families into financial ruin. That’s why I am fighting to bring fiscal sanity back to Washington and I won’t stop until it happens.”

Sen. Rick Scott Introduces SAFE U.S. Facilities Act to Block Access to Federally Secure Facilities from Communist Cuban Regime & Other Adversaries Following Miami TSA Visit

In the wake of the shocking decision by the Biden-Harris administration in May to allow operatives representing the illegitimate communist Cuban regime, which is a state sponsor of terrorism, to tour the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) facilities and U.S. security areas at Miami International Airport, Senator Rick Scott introduced the Stopping Adversaries From Exploring (SAFE) U.S. Facilities Act. This bill would limit federal funding for events involving officials from foreign entities deemed adversarial to the United States, particularly Communist China, Russia, Cuba, Iran, and other State Sponsors of Terrorism. Senator Marco Rubio is a cosponsor of the bill.

Senator Rick Scott said, “It should infuriate every American that the Biden-Harris administration granted operatives representing the illegitimate communist Cuban regime a VIP tour of U.S. security areas at Miami International Airport, all at the expense of the American taxpayer. My SAFE U.S. Facilities Act will block federal funding for these events with adversarial nations, effectively stopping what happened at Miami International Airport from ever happening again. I appreciate the support of Senator Rubio and urge our fellow colleagues to work with us to protect U.S. national security, and the safety of all Americans, by passing this bill immediately.”

Sen. Rick Scott on CPI Report: Biden-Harris Price Hikes Brings Hardship on American Families

following the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Senator Rick Scott released the below statement highlighting the need to implement substantive fiscal reforms to end the ongoing inflation crisis fueled by the Biden-Harris administration’s reckless tax-and-spend agenda. July’s CPI data shows that there has been a significant rise in inflation during Biden’s presidency, with CPI increasing 2.9 percent over the year in July 2024. Since the Biden-Harris administration took office, inflation is up 20.3%.

Senator Rick Scott said, “For months, Biden-Harris Price Hikes have plagued Americans’ wallets and savings accounts – forcing millions of families to do more with less. Skyrocketing prices for groceries, gas and utility bills across the nation due to the Biden-Harris administration’s failed policies and reckless spending has destroyed the American dream for so many, and for folks like my family growing up, it can feel like digging a hole too deep to climb out of. I am always optimistic about the future of America and our ability to save the American Dream, but we need new leadership that will end the reckless spending and dangerous socialist policies that got us into this mess and are now crushing hardworking Americans every single day. Families have to balance their budgets every day, we must force Washington to do the same. That’s why I am fighting like hell to bring down prices and bring fiscal sanity back to Washington so it works for you.”

Sen. Rick Scott: VP Harris’ Radical Plan for Federal Price Controls Should Terrify Every American

Senator Rick Scott released the below statement following reports that Vice President Kamala Harris is proposing federal price controls to combat the historic inflation caused by the Biden-Harris administration’s failed policies, reckless government spending and total war on U.S. energy. Federal price controls are a dangerous and radical policy that will cause tremendous harm to American families and businesses, which is why the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis published a report in 2022 titled, “Why Price Controls Should Stay in the History Books.”

Senator Rick Scott, “Tomorrow, Vice President Harris, a person who has never built a business, doesn’t understand profit and loss, has never met payrolls, and who has never competed in a consumer market, is going to propose federal price controls.

“Getting inflation under control will happen when the federal government stops recklessly spending money it doesn’t have, and we finally beat back the destructive war that the Biden-Harris administration has waged on U.S. energy which has made the cost of everything go up.”

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT… Sen. Rick Scott in The Wall Street Journal: Will America Get Serious About Venezuela?

Senator Rick Scott responded to a recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal with a letter to the editor echoing the need for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to express unwavering support for Venezuelans in the fight for freedom in the aftermath of dictator Nicolás Maduro’s corrupt attempt to maintain power and points to three things the administration must do to show its support.

In the letter to the editor, Senator Rick Scott writes, “The Biden-Harris administration’s history of disgusting appeasement of Nicolás Maduro, the madman ruling Venezuela, has done nothing but enable more repression, torture and oppression of the Venezuelan people.

“If the administration is now serious about supporting Venezuela and ensuring a more stable hemisphere, it will go beyond words and immediately do three things:

  • Commit that no U.S. funds or assistance will go to Mr. Maduro, while reimposing sanctions on him and the military thugs protecting him.
  • Impose sanctions on countries that provide assistance to Mr. Maduro’s crippling dictatorship.
  • Call for the immediate end of repression of the Venezuelan people and make a statement about that every day.”
