Good Morning!
July 1st through July 7th is Clean Beaches Week. The week is dedicated to celebrating America’s beaches and raising awareness on the importance of keeping beaches debris free for the enjoyment of people and the survival of marine life.
The United States has a total coastline measuring approximately 12,383 miles. Florida’s coastline is approximately 8,436 miles, second only to Alaska’s which is approximately 33,904 miles.
During Clean Beaches Week, beach visitors are encouraged to proactively engage in marine debris clean up. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) defines “marine debris” as anything man-made and discarded that enters the environment.
The most common marine debris includes fishing gear, netting, derelict traps, boating debris, snorkel/dive equipment, paper and plastic trash, and household items.
Tips to keep beaches clean:
- Pick up your trash, “leave no trace” of your visit
- Be mindful of shorebirds’ nests and turtle nests while picking up debris
- Stay off the dunes
- Clean up after your pets if you are visiting a pet friendly beach
- Report deceased or distressed marine life to the Florida Wildlife and Conservation Commission hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922)
To join a local beach clean up event, contact Keep Brevard Beautiful.
I consider it a great honor to represent District 19. Please share this link with your friends and family so they too, can sign up for the Mayfield Minute.
If you or someone you know needs my assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my office. My staff and I are here to serve you!

Statewide Update
Counties Most at Risk for Flooding in Florida
Every year in Florida during hurricane season, flooding becomes a major concern due to the state’s flat land and frequent heavy rains. Florida’s flat terrain and coastline make it particularly vulnerable to storm surges, heavy rainfall, and overflowing rivers during tropical weather systems.
Among the counties most susceptible to flooding, Volusia County stands out as the most flood-prone in Florida, ranking prominently in statewide assessments. During Hurricane Ian in 2022, more than a thousand residents in New Smyrna Beach experienced property damage due to flooding. Similarly, communities along the St. Johns River, including those in St. Johns County have flooding issues due to the location of the river.
Additionally, Miami-Dade County is home to densely populated urban areas which face significant flood risks. Brevard County also faces flood threats during hurricanes and tropical storms, making it imperative for residents to prioritize flood preparedness measures.
To mitigate the impact of flooding, homeowners can take proactive steps. Maintaining effective water runoff systems involves keeping gutters, downspouts, and drainage ditches clear of debris to help water flow away from buildings. Improving lot grading helps redirect stormwater away from vulnerable areas, reducing the likelihood of flooding during intense rainfall.
Elevating utilities and anchoring outdoor equipment above anticipated flood levels are critical precautions to safeguard against flood damage. These measures not only protect property but also enhance community resilience in the face of Florida’s unpredictable weather patterns.
Floridians should safeguard their homes and communities during hurricane season to ensure resilience and security against flooding. For more information on how to protect your home against flooding, click here.
Funding Approved for Workforce and Infrastructure Development Across Florida
Last week, Governor DeSantis announced substantial funding to advance workforce development and infrastructure across Florida. Through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund (JGGF) and the Defense Infrastructure Grant (DIG), investments were directed towards Pensacola State College, the city of DeFuniak Springs, Santa Rosa County, and Jackson County.
Key projects funded through the JGGF include Pensacola State College’s establishment of an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics program. DeFuniak Springs received funding for infrastructure enhancements to support aerospace employers, creating a projected 500 jobs. Additionally, funding to Jackson County’s infrastructure development is expected to generate 400 new jobs.
The Defense Infrastructure Grant awarded to Santa Rosa County’s Whiting Aviation Park will enhance security and operational efficiency, crucial for supporting military communities and their operational needs statewide.
The Florida Job Growth Grant Fund and Defense Infrastructure Grant exemplify the states approach to sustainable economic development. These investments not only strengthen local economies but also pave the way for continued growth throughout the State.

FWC Celebrates 25 Years of Service
Last week, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) celebrated 25 years of dedicated service to the state of Florida. Established on July 1, 1999 by the collective decision of Florida voters, FWC merged several agencies which included Marine Fisheries Commission, Division of Marine Resources, the Florida Marine Patrol, and the Division of Law Enforcement of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to create a force for conservation and wildlife management.
“I’m proud to say that over the past quarter-century, we’ve achieved significant milestones in managing Florida’s fish and wildlife resources,” stated FWC Executive Director Roger Young. “Our team’s dedication and passion have been instrumental in ensuring both the well-being of our natural resources and the enjoyment of our residents and visitors alike.”
Among its many achievements, FWC has expanded the Wildlife Management Area system to encompass over six million acres, providing extensive opportunities for outdoor recreation and habitat preservation.
Innovative programs like “Catch a Florida Memory” and “TrophyCatch” have not only encouraged responsible angling but also contributed crucial data to conservation efforts. The State Reef Fish Survey has significantly enhanced data collection for key reef species supporting sustainable fishing practices. FWC has also successfully restored the wild turkey population in Holmes County and pioneered initiatives such as the Python Challenge to combat invasive species. The establishment of the Florida Youth Conservation Center Network underscores their commitment to inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.
As they celebrate this milestone, the FWC extends its gratitude to partners, stakeholders, volunteers, and the community for their steadfast support. Looking forward, they remain dedicated to preserving and enhancing Florida’s natural heritage for the benefit of future generations.

David Neuman, President of the Space Coast Young Republicans, presented plaques to the co-grand marshals, Edwina Szelag and John Daly of Green Gables, Larry and Jeannette Jarnes, and Rose Yeary. Their contributions to our community are invaluable, and it was a pleasure to recognize their dedication.
The parade began just after 10:00 a.m. on Hickory Street and ended in Historic Downtown Melbourne. The Melbourne Fire Department Honor Guard headed the parade.
The parade was followed by an Independence Day celebration at the Liberty Bell Memorial Museum. The parade was organized by the Space Coast Young Republicans, whose hard work and dedication made the celebration possible. Their commitment to our community is greatly appreciated, and they deserve recognition for organizing such a wonderful event.
Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the parade, the day was truly special.
Hurricane Relief Efforts and Air Mobile Ministries
In recent weeks, Hurricane Beryl has left a devastating mark across the Caribbean, particularly affecting communities already grappling economic challenges. The aftermath of these natural disasters often leaves communities vulnerable to waterborne diseases due to contaminated water sources, posing severe health risk to survivors.
Joe Hurston of Air Mobile Ministries in Titusville, alongside co-pilot David Walen from Wilmington, North Carolina, have made it their mission to assist those affected by Hurricane Beryl. For years, they have dedicated themselves to delivering essential aid to disaster-stricken regions worldwide.
Their current mission is focused on delivering specially designed water purifiers to areas affected by Hurricane Beryl. These purifiers are crucial in providing safe drinking water where access is compromised or nonexistent due to the hurricane’s impact. Their strategy includes reaching areas like Puerto Rico, where the urgent need for clean water is paramount.
Air Mobile Ministries is a testament of faith and compassion. Hurston and Walen view their mission not just as a duty but as a calling, seeing their work as a way to demonstrate compassion and God’s love through helping others.
As we witness the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, the resilience and generosity of organizations like Air Mobile Ministries remind us of the power of community and compassion in times of adversity.
