Governor DeSantis to Stop CCP Influence

Last week, Governor Ron DeSantis announced executive action and legislative proposals to address threats posed by the Communist Party of China and other hostile foreign powers in cyberspace, real estate, and academia.

These measures will curtail the nefarious intentions of all seven countries on Florida’s list of countries of concern, making it more difficult for China, Cuba, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Syria, or Venezuela to engage in espionage or influence operations within Florida’s borders and preventing purchases of agricultural land and lands surrounding military bases by those governments or their agents.

Governor DeSantis Proposes Family Tax Relief

Governor DeSantis announced a portion of his tax relief proposal for the upcoming legislative session, which provides $1.1 billion in tax relief for Florida families through multiple tax holidays, if passed by the Legislature.

“I’m proud that Florida has a record budget surplus and am happy to propose historic tax relief to Florida families,” Governor DeSantis said. “This proposal will allow families to purchase items for their children at a lower cost and help families keep more money in their pockets. I look forward to working with the Legislature to bring this major relief to Florida families.”

Governor DeSantis: Florida Leads Nation with the Lowest Unemployment Rate Among Largest States and Most New Businesses

Governor DeSantis announced Florida’s unemployment rate remained strong at 2.7 percent in August, the lowest unemployment rate among the nation’s 10 largest states, and a full percentage point lower than the national rate of 3.7 percent. For 21 consecutive months Florida’s unemployment rate has been lower than the national rate.

Florida also led the nation in new business formations with 1,534,221 new businesses, outpacing second place California by more than 250,000 new business formations since January 2020.

“Florida has the lowest unemployment rate among the 10 most populous states and the highest number of new business formations because we have encouraged workforce development, kept the economy open, and put Florida families first,” Governor DeSantis said.

Governor DeSantis Awards Nearly $30 Million for Workforce Development in Florida’s Space Coast

Governor DeSantis announced nearly $30 million for workforce development in the Space Coast region as part of a multi-agency initiative to support competitive industries in the area.

“I set a goal to make Florida the best state in the nation for workforce education by 2030 — and we are doing that by making investments that expand opportunity and meet industry needs,” Governor DeSantis said. “Currently there are over 91,000 manufacturing and aerospace technology-related jobs on the space coast and this $30 million investment will build more opportunities for Floridians.”

AG Moody and Clay County Sheriff Shut Down Huge Fentanyl Operation —Seizing Enough to Kill Four Million Floridians

Attorney General Moody’s Office of Statewide Prosecution and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office teamed up to shut down a major fentanyl trafficking operation in Clay County. Attorney General Moody announced that as a result of the investigation, Clay County deputies arrested two suspects who ordered and then distributed large quantities of fentanyl to other dealers in Clay and Duval counties.

Authorities seized more than eight kilograms of fentanyl, along with assorted amounts of other drugs and paraphernalia. This is enough fentanyl to kill more than four million people.

“Fentanyl is killing Americans at a record pace, and these drug traffickers compiled enough of this deadly synthetic opioid to kill everyone within 18 counties of their criminal operation,” Attorney General Moody said. “Thankfully, working with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, we were able to take these deadly drugs off the streets before they could kill Floridians.”

CFO Jimmy Patronis: Florida Will Act Against Credit Card Companies Who Target the 2nd Amendment

Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis issued a statement following recent media reports that credit card companies are going to start tracking gun and ammunition sales.

The reports state that major credit card companies such as Visa, Mastercard and American Express have decided to apply a new sales code to distinguish firearm purchases at U.S. gun stores. Additionally, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled on a Texas bill that major corporations, including banking institutions, do not have a right to limit American’s constitutional rights.

“The Second Amendment is foundational to our American way of life. The idea that law-abiding Americans would be put on some kind of corporate watchlist is disturbing,” CFO Patronis said. “Our rights come from our Creator, not the government, and especially not big corporations. It is clear that the actions by these credit card companies are part of a larger effort to curtail God-given constitutional rights of Americans. It is also symptomatic of the virus known as ESG, which is part of a global effort to socially re-engineer the country that we love so much. There is no way we are going to allow that to happen in the free state of Florida.”

Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez

LG Nuñez on Fox: Governor DeSantis will use Every Tool to Address the Border Crisis Because Joe Biden won’t

On Fox News, Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez explained why the Florida Legislature budgeted $12 million to remove illegal aliens to sanctuary states and cities and Governor DeSantis has acted on it:

“We received $12 million, and (Governor DeSantis) made it very clear that he was going to spend every penny of that $12 million to protect Floridians. Because what we’re seeing is that fentanyl overdoses are the number one killer of individuals ages 18 to 45. Human trafficking is a major concern for our state.

“We have had state strike force teams with law enforcement here in our state, and they have interdicted, and they have been able to arrest individuals, 38 charges of human smuggling, and 58 charges of drug trafficking. This is something that should concern every single Floridian, every single American. And the governor is going to use every tool at his disposal to address this crisis because the federal government and Joe Biden refuse to do so.”

State Senator Debbie Mayfield – Mayfield Minutes 09/25/2022

Good Morning!

The Last Sunday in September Honors Gold Star Mothers and Families

The First Gold Star Mother’s Day was originally established in 1936…86 years ago

During World War I, service flags hung in homes and businesses with a Blue Star to represent every immediate family member serving in the Armed Forces. As the war progressed, sadly many Americans lost their lives in combat, and in 1936 the Gold Star was introduced in their honor. It was superimposed on the original Blue Star to recognize the American heroes who courageously gave their lives in service and sacrifice to our nation.

The mothers of those fallen service members collectively launched a national movement, called the Gold Star Mothers. Every American president since FDR has acknowledged the last Sunday in September as the Gold Star Mother’s Day.  In 2011, President Barack Obama amended the original title of “Gold Star Mother’s Day” to include families, renaming the last Sunday in September as “Gold Star Mother’s and Families Day.”

In September 2020, President Donald Trump said, “The brave men and women of our Armed Forces represent the very best of our great Nation, matched only by the families who walk beside them in their service. On this Gold Star Mother’s and Families Day, we solemnly honor the memory of every lost Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman, and we humbly grieve with their families who persevere with remarkable courage, strength, and grace.”

Please take the time to thank every military family for their service and sacrifices for our country and especially the Gold Star families for their loss.

I consider it a great honor to represent District 17 not only on days of special remembrance, but every day.

Statewide Update

Governor Ron DeSantis Declares State of Emergency for All 67 Counties as Tropical Storm Ian threatens Florida

On Saturday, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 22-219, declaring a State of Emergency for all 67 counties in the potential path of Tropical Storm Ian. Additionally, Governor DeSantis has requested a federal pre-landfall Emergency Declaration in anticipation of impacts from the storm.

This declaration will make available important resources and support, as well as free up funding sources for emergency protective measures. Under this emergency order, members of the Florida National Guard will be activated and on standby awaiting orders.

“This storm has the potential to strengthen into a major hurricane and we encourage all Floridians to make their preparations. We are coordinating with all state and local government partners to track potential impacts of this storm,” said Governor DeSantis.

Floridians and their families are urged to begin preparing to ensure their family emergency supply kit is ready and stocked with food, water, and medicine.

Attorney General Moody Expands Price Gouging Hotline Statewide as Tropical Storm Ian Intensifies

The expansion comes following Governor Ron DeSantis’s amended executive order expanding the state of emergency to all 67 counties in Florida. Floridians statewide can now report instances of severe price increases on essential commodities needed to prepare for the storm to the Attorney General’s Office. Florida’s price gouging law only applies to commodities and services essential to preparing for, or recovering from, a storm during a declared state of emergency.

Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “As Tropical Storm Ian intensifies, I am expanding Florida’s Price Gouging Hotline statewide. Please watch Ian closely, and as you prepare for a potential storm strike, report incidences of price gouging to my office.”

During a storm-related declared state of emergency, state law prohibits excessive increases in the price of essential commodities, such as food, water, hotel rooms, ice, gasoline, lumber, equipment and storm-related services needed as a direct result of the event.

Anyone who suspects price gouging can report it to the Florida Attorney General’s Office by using the No Scam app, visiting MyFloridaLegal.com or calling 1(866) 9NO-SCAM. Attorney General Moody’s No Scam app can be downloaded for free on Apple and Android devices through the app store by searching No Scam.

For tips on reporting price gouging, click here.

For more information on price gouging, click here.

Violators of the price gouging statute are subject to civil penalties of $1,000 per violation and up to a total of $25,000 for multiple violations committed in a single 24-hour period. In addition to the civil penalties for price gouging, state law criminalizes the sale of goods and services to the public without possession of a business tax receipt.

Agency Highlight

Volunteer Florida

In 1994, Volunteer Florida was established in Florida Statute to manage national service programs, such as AmeriCorps, and to advocate for volunteerism throughout the Sunshine State. Their mission has expanded to serve as the state’s lead agency managing the Florida Disaster Fund which mobilizes volunteers before, during, and after disasters.

Volunteer Florida recently launched Volunteer Connect, which is the state’s official volunteer opportunities platform. Through Volunteer Connect’s efforts, the agency delivers high-impact volunteer programs and opportunities that engage Floridians, transform communities, and make the state a better place to live.

Volunteer Florida also administers Florida’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). The CERT provides basic training in disaster response skills which allows citizen volunteers to provide critical support, giving immediate assistance to victims before emergency first responders arrive on scene.  Funding is administered by Volunteer Florida through the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Program.

Most recently, Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Josefina “Josie” Tamayo as CEO of Volunteer Florida. Ms. Tamayo is the former General Counsel at the Agency for Health Care Administration.

“Josie has served the state for many years, and I know that she will continue to serve to the best of her ability in this new role,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Josie will be a great asset to the Volunteer Florida team.”

Josie Tamayo was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. After fleeing Cuba under Fidel Castro, she and her parents settled in Milledgeville, Georgia. She received her bachelor’s degree from Emory University and her law degree from Georgia State University. Tamayo has 33 years of experience as a public servant serving as an Assistant State Attorney, and General Counsel for five state agencies. She also served as the First Cuban American Woman appointed to serve as Circuit Judge on the Second Judicial Circuit.

In times of crisis, Ms. Tamayo is tasked with statewide disaster preparation, rescue, and recovery in our communities as CEO of Volunteer Florida. Volunteer Florida, under her leadership, is also responsible for the Governor’s special initiatives, including Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, as well as supporting events to honor Florida’s most outstanding volunteers, educators, veterans and health care professionals.

Constituent of the Week

Latoya “Miss B” Bullard, M.S.C.I.T, ED.S

Our Constituent of the Week is Latoya “Miss B” Bullard. Nearly two decades ago, Miss B envisioned a community in which every child in Indian River County would have the tools and the support needed to compete and accomplish their goals. That vision became a reality when she established Miss B’s Learning Bees.

She held the first academic enrichment program for children struggling in school in 2006 and was quickly recognized as a Distinguished Educator by the Florida Department of Education.

Miss B has always said, “I believed and continue to believe, that if we provide students with the time, support, and resources they need, they will be successful.”

By 2014 she had assisted over 75 children and Miss B’s Learning Bees was established as a 501(c) 3 non-profit. Her data told an amazing story, an astounding 98% of the students in the program experienced increased scores in their school performance.

“We started by helping children reach proficiency in reading, math, and science by providing academic enrichment and learning opportunities beyond the school day,” she said.

In her program, each student works one on one with a certified/retired teacher to help close the gaps in their academic foundation through the creation of an Individual Action Plan for each student specific to their learning needs. Miss B also established a collaborative program with a Behavior Analyst to improve student behaviors known to hinder learning.

Further, Miss B identified that transportation and food insecurity are significant challenges to a child’s success. She opened “neighborhood hubs” in Oslo, Gifford, and Wabasso allowing students the convenience of a neighborhood location for after school learning and minimized their worries about their next meal. All students in Miss B’s program receive a wholesome snack and drink before they begin after school academics. Before they leave for home, they are also provided a healthy dinner.  There is no charge at Miss B’s Learning Bees for students.

Miss B was born and raised in Indian River County, was a member of the first graduating class of Sebastian River High School, and graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, SC. Senate District 17 benefits from her compassion as a teacher, mentor, education advocate, and friend to students and families in our community.
