US Senator Rick Scott’s Week in Review 07/22/2022

This week, as families in Florida and across the nation are paying nearly $4.50 per gallon for gas, Senator Rick Scott took to the Senate floor to request the immediate and unanimous passage of his Give Americans Stability at Pumps as Rising Inflation Causes Emergencies (GAS PRICE) Act. This one-page bill does not appropriate any taxpayer dollars or create any new policy, but would simply direct the Energy Information Administration (EIA) to report to Congress any policy or rule set by the Biden administration which raises energy costs for American families. This is the second time Senator Scott has requested the passage of his GAS PRICE Act. This bill would create transparency and produce information that is especially helpful to Florida families, who consume energy which is primarily produced with natural gas. As they did in October 2021, Democrats again blocked the GAS PRICE Act from passing the Senate.

Senator Scott has also been calling on Congress to pass his Furthering Resource Exploration and Empowering (FREE) American Energy Act, which would expedite the federal agencies’ review process of applications for permits, waivers, licenses, or other authorizations related to energy production. This bill would also reduce burdensome or unnecessary regulations originating from federal executive branch agencies and create an interagency process for energy production approval for states with federal lands.

While Senate Democrats continue their fight to cover for President Joe Biden’s radical Green New Deal energy agenda, and deny the horrible impacts it’s having on Florida families, Senator Scott will keep fighting for American energy independence and to lower energy costs for families in their homes and at the pump.

Senate Democrats Block Sen. Rick Scott’s Bill to Expose Biden Admin’s Impact on Rising Energy Costs

Senator Rick Scott asked for unanimous consent on the Senate floor to pass his bill, the GAS PRICE Act, which would direct the Energy Information Administration (EIA) to report to Congress any policy or rule set by the Biden administration which raises energy costs for American families. Senate Democrats blocked its passage.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Joe Biden has done everything in his power to destroy American energy independence. Now, Americans are paying $4.46 per gallon for gas and are forced to make impossible choices, like whether they should put gas in their cars or food on the table for their kids. Sadly, the Biden administration has shown ZERO interest in fixing this urgent problem. That’s why I asked my colleagues to pass my GAS PRICE Act. We should all want Congress be informed when a new policy or rule causes energy costs for American families to rise. Of course, Democrats blocked my bill’s passage because they will do anything to cover up the disastrous impacts Joe Biden’s Green New Deal agenda is having on American families. It’s shameful, but I refuse to stop fighting for American energy independence and against progressive policies that are hurting working families.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott on Senate Floor: Joe Biden’s Silence on Cuba is Shameful

Senator Rick Scott continued to highlight the movement for freedom and democracy in Cuba and slammed President Joe Biden’s shameful appeasement of the illegitimate communist Cuban regime in speech on the Senate floor. Last week, as Senator Scott and others across the world marked the one year anniversary of the start of the marches and demonstrations for democracy across Cuba on July 11, President Biden remained silent and failed to commemorate the occasion or stand with the brave Cuban people. In his speech, Senator Scott called on President Biden to condemn the human rights abuses of the illegitimate communist Cuban regime, end his policy of appeasement of Castro and Díaz-Canel and support the DEMOCRACIA Act which Senator Scott introduced in October with Rep. Byron Donalds. Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott: Our Fight For ‘Patria Y Vida’ in Cuba Remains as Strong as the Legacy of Oswaldo Payá

Senator Rick Scott released the following statement in commemoration of tenth anniversary of the assassination of the Cuban dissidents and freedom fighters Oswaldo Paya and Harold Cepero Escalante, by the illegitimate communist Cuban regime.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Today, I join Rosa Maria Payá and the freedom-loving people of Cuba in commemorating the tenth anniversary of the ruthless murder of the Cuban dissidents and freedom fighters Oswaldo Payá and Harold Cepero Escalante at the hands of the evil Castro Regime. Oswaldo Payá was fearlessly dedicated to seeing freedom and democracy return to Cuba and it terrified the regime. Sadly, Oswaldo and Harold are just two of the countless lives cut short by the illegitimate communist Cuban regime. For decades, we have seen how the cowardly regime oppresses, attacks, kidnaps, tortures, jails and murders the brave people of Cuba who only ask for their God-given basic human rights. The oppression must end. The United States must lead the freedom-loving nations of the world in the defense of human rights in Cuba and Latin America.

Our fight to regain democracy and freedom in Cuba, defend human rights across the hemisphere and hold the Castro/Díaz-Canel regime accountable for its atrocious crimes against humanity remains as alive and strong as the legacy of Oswaldo Payá. As we honor the lives of Oswaldo and Harold today, we are again reminded why we can’t stop fighting to see a new day of freedom, ‘Patria y Vida’ in Cuba.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott and Colleagues Introduce Bill to Stop Federal Investment in Blacklisted Chinese Firms

Senator Rick Scott joined Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) to introduce the Turn off the Tap Act to address a national security vulnerability by prohibiting federal funds from going to firms listed on several federal blacklists, including the Department of Commerce’s Entity List and the Non-SDN Chinese Military-Industrial Complex Companies List. Currently, there is no central ban on federal funds going to foreign firms explicitly identified through U.S. government blacklists, including dangerous Chinese companies. Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott Issues Weekly Update on Biden’s Inflation Crisis

Senator Rick Scott released a weekly update on his actions to address America’s debt crisis and rising inflation. This week, Senator Rick Scott has continued his fight against the so-called “CHIPS Act,” a $250 billion pro-China spending spree, that gives the Biden administration a wide open door to continue their reckless socialist policies. Just this week, the Congressional Budget Office released a reportestimating the “CHIPS Act” will raise the federal deficit by $79 billion, further fueling Biden’s record-breaking inflation crisis.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Biden’s inflation crisis is costing Florida families nearly $800 extra every month. It’s an incompetence tax on the hardworking Floridians just trying to make ends meet. Now, Democrats want to pass a $250 billion ‘CHIPS Act’ that will make the problems we have at home harder by increasing inflation. We know that what causes inflation—reckless government spending. A vote for CHIPS is a vote for inflation, a vote to help communist China, and a vote to add $79 BILLION to the federal deficit. I will keep fighting to stop Biden’s pro-China, America-last policies, and I’ll do everything I can to put an end to his inflation crisis—the American people deserve better.” Read more HERE.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT… Sen. Rick Scott in The Hill: To honor Shinzo Abe, we must continue his vision for East Asia

Senator Rick Scott wrote an op-ed for The Hill following the tragic and horrific assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

In the op-edSenator Rick Scott wrote,

“As the world continues to grapple with the sudden and senseless loss of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, many, including myself, have offered their thoughts on his legacy as a leader.

He was an unapologetic believer in the power of democracy and one of the strongest voices in support of freedom across the Info-Pacific.

He was particularly a champion for peace through strength, and stood up for Taiwan against Communist China’s aggression.

To honor the incredible legacy and work of Shinzo Abe, we must carry forward his vision for democracy, peace through strength and prosperity across the region.

The day before Abe was assassinated, I was in Tokyo to meet with private sector leaders, high-ranking officials in the Japanese government, and American military members stationed there.

Shinzo Abe was not afraid of Communist China’s threats. He knew that bowing to bullies like General Secretary Xi Jinping only weakens the power of democratic alliances and our rules-based global order.

With Abe now gone from the scene, President Biden must make serious adjustments in his posture toward Communist China…

President Biden must acknowledge and be clear, as I and many others have, that we are in the midst of a New Cold War with Communist China.

First, Biden must end his attempts to slash funding for our nation’s military. In both of Biden’s proposed budgets since taking office, he has suggested such inadequate defense spending that even members of his own party have ignored his proposals.

Second, President Biden must recalibrate his approach to U.S. – Chinese trade… I believe, as stated in my plan to Rescue America, that we ought to gradually end all imports from Communist China until a new regime honors basic human rights and freedoms.

He can start by ditching his $52 BILLION “Chips Bill” which has horribly weak language that doesn’t expressly prohibit the tens of billions of dollars in spending it authorizes from being spent in Communist China.

Biden must also stop the sale of U.S. oil to Communist China, and urge the private sector to end reliance on Chinese manufacturing.

If we can isolate Communist China, shrink its influence and eliminate the threats it poses to the world, we will improve the national security of the U.S. and our allies.

Through strong military and trade alliances, the United States has the ability to create a world that is independent of Communist China… Shinzo Abe worked to advance these goals. To honor his legacy, we must seize the opportunity now to carry his legacy into the future.” Read more HERE.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT… Fox News: Rick Scott blasts computer chip bill as giveaway to Big Tech: ‘No return but inflation’

This week, Senator Rick Scott continued his fight against the so-called “CHIPS Act,” a $250 billion pro-China spending spree, that gives the Biden administration a wide open door to continue their reckless socialist policies. Read more about Sen. Scott’s fight against the wasteful “CHIPS Act” in the Fox News article, Rick Scott blasts computer chip bill as giveaway to Big Tech: ‘No return but inflation’, below:

Sen. Rick Scott took the White House and fellow Republicans to task Thursday for proposing to give billions in taxpayer money to profitable high-tech companies as part of President Biden’s plan to boost the U.S. semiconductor industry.

Scott, a member of the GOP Senate leadership, told Fox News Digital the $252 billion legislation being negotiated was not only likely to exacerbate inflation, but amounted to little more than a giveaway to big business.

‘If we’re going to invest dollars, we ought to get a return,’ said Scott, R-Fla. ‘There’s no return for the American taxpayer in this legislation, except maybe in regards to making inflation worse.’

The semiconductor bill, which is billed as a means to counter China’s dominance in cyber technology and computer chips, initially had a price tag of $52 billion. In recent days, the bill has swelled to include an additional $200 billion for research and development.

Scott said there were few guardrails in place to ensure that companies getting the money actually needed it to produce computer chips. The Florida Republican also argued there were no specifications for what companies needed to produce after getting billions in taxpayer money.

A company like Intel — which made $20 billion last year, and their CEO made $180 million — [they’re] going to get $3 (billion) to $4 billion to build something, but we don’t specify exactly what it is,’ said Scott. ‘There’s no obligation for them to build the technology we need, but they get the money and a tax credit anyway.’

The semiconductor bill has been a top priority of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. Schumer initially secured passage of a broader measure last year to combat Chinese dominance. That bill died after the House and Senate failed to forge a compromise and Republicans voiced opposition.

Instead, Democrats stripped out the most popular sections and put them in a stand-alone bill. That measure cleared a procedural vote in the Senate this week with 16 Republicans voting in favor.

Scott said the process used to craft the bill was flawed because Democratic leaders opted to skirt the committee process and put the legislation directly on the floor.

‘Moves like this show why this country is saddled with $30 trillion in debt,’ the senator said.

Proponents of the bill have long argued that it will boost America’s competitive advantage against China when it comes to computer chips and other prime technology. The White House, in particular, has moved to frame the bill as a boon for national security.

The Biden administration, meanwhile, has pushed hard for the passage of the bill. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said recently that the issue was a “grave national security threat” since military equipment relies on computer chips manufactured abroad.

‘This is a core national security imperative. Right now, as I said before, we buy all of these chips of a certain kind from Taiwan,” Raimondo recently told PBS News Hour. “We don’t make this stuff in America. And yet it is what we need in military equipment, in pacemakers in the hospital, in cars.’

Scott contended that the legislation did nothing to prohibit chip manufacturers from continuing to do business in China.

‘They say this is an anti-China measure, but I can’t find that anywhere in the bill,’ he said.” Read more HERE.
