US Senator Rick Scott’s Week in Review 12/03/2021

Image

This week, Senator Rick Scott asked for unanimous consent on the Senate floor to pass his Upholding the Law at Our Border Act. Senator Scott’s legislation would require the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the vetting and processing of migrants apprehended along the southwest border to ensure all laws are being upheld. But Senate Democrats blocked its passage.

Senator Scott’s request to pass this legislation follows his visit to southern border in Yuma, Arizona last week where he saw firsthand the impacts of the Biden administration’s reckless and dangerous open border and amnesty policies and personally witnessed dozens of illegal border crossings. While in Yuma, he met with local leaders, U.S. Border Patrol agents and law enforcement at the Morelos Dam to discuss the Biden administration’s disastrous open border policies that have resulted in a record-breaking 1.7 million apprehensions of immigrants illegally entering the United States.

Sen. Rick Scott: Washington is Broken. I’m Fighting Like Hell to Fix it & Preserve the American Dream

Following the votes in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to pass another Continuing Resolution, Senator Rick Scott released the below statement slamming the continued failure of Congress to fulfill its most basic duty and pass a budget that addresses the needs of American families.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Yesterday, the United States Congress failed the American people once again. Instead of doing its job and passing a budget, a Democrat-controlled Congress passed another Continuing Resolution (CR), patted itself on the back for a job not done and walked away. The American people need to understand that passing a CR does NOTHING to address the problems before us – it simply continues funding for last year’s priorities, keeping America in the past. Continuing to narrowly avoid government shutdowns isn’t a sign of success, it’s the clearest example of total failure we see in Washington. Passing a budget is one of the most basic and fundamental duties of Congress, yet year after year, it fails to live within its means and deliver for American families. It’s an unacceptable failure that must end.

“You can’t make up the insanity of what Congress is doing. Here in Washington, tired politicians keep pushing the same broken mindset: fuel reckless spending, ignore rising inflation and write off excuses when they can’t show up and do the job they were elected for. It’s shameful. That’s why I’ve been fighting to pass my No Budget, No Pay bill with Senator Mike Braun so that when Congress fails to do its job, members don’t get paid. That’s how the real world works and Washington shouldn’t be any different. When I ran to represent the great State of Florida in the U.S. Senate, I did so on a plan to make Washington work for Florida families and I’ve fought every day to bring some sense to the dysfunction here in D.C. It’s clear we still have our work cut out for us, but I’ll never stop fighting like hell to fix it.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott: In Dobbs Case, SCOTUS Can Protect Life and Restore States’ Legislative Sovereignty

Senator Rick Scott released the following statement as the United States Supreme Court hears oral arguments in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Earlier this year, Senator Scott joined more than 200 of his colleagues in Congress in an amicus brief asking the Court to uphold Mississippi’s law restricting elective abortions of unborn children after 15 weeks.

Senator Rick Scott said, “I firmly believe that life begins at conception and every child deserves to be welcomed with open and loving arms. That shouldn’t be a controversial statement to make, and it shouldn’t be hard to agree that inflicting pain on and taking the life of an unborn child is abhorrent and has no place in our society. A bipartisan majority of Mississippi legislators passed a law to protect unborn babies after 15 weeks, a law nearly four dozen European nations already have in place to protect basic human rights and human dignity. Today the U.S. Supreme Court has an enormously important opportunity to restore constitutionally-protected legislative sovereignty of the individual states and protect innocent life.

“For more than four decades, our nation’s laws to protect the lives of vulnerable unborn children have been stifled by activist judges and a misguided reading of the Constitution. I pray that the Court will make the right decision in this case by upholding Mississippi’s law, protecting life and delivering a clear message that legislating belongs to the people’s elected representatives, not the courts.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott to International Olympic Committee: Communist China’s Treatment of Peng Shuai Shows Why 2022 Games Cannot be Held in Beijing

Senator Rick Scott sent a letter to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach regarding the recent disappearance of the Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai following her public allegations of sexual assault by a former Chinese Communist Party official. Given that American athletes and coaches will soon be travelling to Beijing for the 2022 Olympic Games, Senator Scott is requesting the IOC explain how it plans to ensure the safety of athletes and coaches in the face of Communist China’s rampant abuses, and if it will support an investigation into Peng Shuai’s disturbing allegations and disappearance. Sen. Rick Scott Leads Colleagues in Introducing the Upholding the Law at Our Border Act

Senator Rick Scott led Senators Ron Johnson, Rob Portman, Tommy Tuberville, James Lankford, Marsha Blackburn and Mike Lee in introducing the Upholding the Law at Our Border Act. This legislation would require the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the vetting and processing of migrants apprehended along the southwest border and to ensure that all laws are being upheld.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Thanks to the Biden administration’s open border and amnesty policies, there have been nearly 1.7 million apprehensions at our southern border JUST THIS YEAR, with virtually zero immigrant vetting process being enforced – he’s just laying out a welcome mat for human traffickers and savage cartels bringing drugs and crime to our communities, and blatantly ignoring U.S. laws and policies that are designed to keep America safe. Under the incompetent reign of Biden and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, we have no idea how many illegal aliens have been released into our nation, we have no idea how many have been resettled and we have no idea where they are in our own country. The administration is either intentionally keeping local law enforcement and communities in the dark, or willfully breaking U.S. laws by letting unvetted immigrants roam freely across America. We can’t allow them to continue recklessly ignoring U.S. law and putting families at risk. My bill, the Upholding the Law at Our Border Act, requires an immediate investigation to ensure the proper vetting and processing of anyone that comes into our country, and holds the administration accountable for its basic duty of upholding U.S. laws.” Read more HERE. Lea en español AQUÍ.

Democrats Block Sen. Rick Scott Bill to Hold Biden Accountable for Securing Southern Border

Following his visit to the United States’ southern border in Yuma, Arizona last week, Senator Rick Scott asked for unanimous consent on the Senate floor to pass his Upholding the Law at Our Border Act. During his visit to the border in Yuma, Senator Scott saw firsthand the impacts of the Biden administration’s reckless and dangerous open border and amnesty policies. In response to this ongoing crisis, Senator Scott’s legislation would require the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the vetting and processing of migrants apprehended along the southwest border to ensure all laws are being upheld. Senate Democrats blocked its passage.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Just in the short time I was with our brave law enforcement and border patrol agents in Yuma last week, we watched dozens of migrants illegally enter the United States through massive gaps in the border wall – gaps that could easily be filled with the piles and piles of fencing sitting and rotting away at Joe Biden’s direction. And we know drugs, like deadly fentanyl, are pouring across the border too. It makes me furious to see this administration so recklessly ignore the law and its duty to protect our borders. My bill, the Upholding the Law at Our Border Act, is a simple piece of legislation that would find out if the Department of Homeland Security is following the laws of this nation. Of course, Senate Democrats blocked it. It has become crystal clear that under the Biden administration, Senate Democrats have no interest in solving problems, they only know how to cover for Biden’s massive failures. I want to ask my Democrat colleagues: how do you explain Biden’s open border policies to the parents and families of the 100,000 lives lost in drug overdoses this year? How do you explain the Biden administration’s decision to leave our borders open, putting our brave border patrol agents, American families and our communities at risk from the savage cartels? The American people deserve better than this and I’ll never stop fighting to secure the border.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott Holds Press Conference on Biden’s Growing Border Crisis in Yuma, Arizona

Following his visit to the southern border, Senator Rick Scott joined local leaders and law enforcement at the Morelos Dam in Yuma, Arizona to discuss the Biden administration’s disastrous open border policies that have resulted in a record-breaking 1.7 million apprehensions of immigrants illegally entering the United States. Yesterday, Senator Scott announced his Upholding the Law at Our Border Act to require the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the vetting and processing of migrants apprehended along the southwest border and to ensure that all laws are being upheld.

Senator Rick Scott said, “I’ve visited the southern border four times since being elected—including two trips to Arizona this year alone. During these trips I’ve come away with two big issues. The first is that our border patrol and local law enforcement here in Arizona and across the entire country are absolutely heroes. Here in Yuma, border patrol is encountering illegal aliens every day, some of which are dangerous criminals or cartel members. While it’s clear they aren’t receiving the respect they deserve from the White House and Democrats in Washington, I am honored to have this opportunity to thank them and be their partner and voice in Congress.

“The second issue is what everyone has seen so clearly this year—Joe Biden’s open border and amnesty policies have been a total disaster for our nation. Biden is simply laying out a welcome mat for human traffickers and savage cartels bringing drugs and crime to our communities, and blatantly ignoring U.S. laws and policies that were intentionally designed to keep America safe. We can’t let this stand any longer. The folks here in Yuma and all across our southern border need help. Our law enforcement needs help. There’s only one place to start—we must SECURE THE BORDER and give these brave men and women every resource they need to keep us safe. Every day that Biden and DHS Secretary Mayorkas fail in that mission, they are failing the American people.” Read more HERE. Lea en español AQUÍ.

Sen. Rick Scott to Biden: Don’t Remove the FARC From the List of Foreign Terrorist Organizations

Senator Rick Scott released the below statement condemning U.S. Department of State’s notice to remove The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) and calling on Biden administration to not move forward with this decision. Earlier this year, Senator Scott introduced a resolution reaffirming the United States’ commitment to Colombia, America’s strongest ally in Latin America, and condemning any efforts to undermine democracy and encourages the international community to join the United States in standing with Colombia.

Senator Rick Scott said, “The FARC has been attacking, threatening and inflicting terror to the people of Colombia and our hemisphere for decades. This terrorist organization backed by the Castro and Maduro regimes has constantly attempted to destabilize Colombia’s democracy. It is absolutely unacceptable that the Biden administration would even consider removing FARC from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations with absolutely no proof they can be trusted or justification for this decision, especially during Colombia’s Presidential race for 2022. This move clearly shows where Biden’s loyalty lies: with the far-left, socialist candidate Gustavo Petro.

“The United States should be leading the international community in the fight to defend peace, freedom and democracy, and Colombia is our greatest democratic ally in Latin America and a partner in combatting drug trafficking and terrorism. But once again, Biden chooses appeasement over the security and stability of our hemisphere, completely betraying the United States and Colombia’s commitment to promoting security, prosperity, human rights and democracy across the Western Hemisphere. President Biden must take a stand and be on the right side of history by not moving forward with this terrible decision.” Read more HERE. Lea en español AQUÍ.

Sen. Rick Scott Applauds White House for Heeding His Call to Invite Taiwan to Democracy Summit

Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after the White House heeded his call to inviteTaiwan to participate in The Summit on Democracy, which is being convened by the White House and Department of State on December 9th and 10th to discuss challenges and opportunities facing the world’s democracies. This announcement comes after Senator Scott sent a letter to President Biden urging him to invite Taiwan to the Summit.

Senator Rick Scott said, “I am glad the White House followed my advice and is choosing to stand on the side of freedom and democracy. Taiwan is one of our most valued and strategic partners in the Asia-Pacific, and they are evidence that democracy is for everyone. They not only deserve a seat at the table during the December summit, but merit our full and unapologetic support in the face of Communist China’s continued attempts at intimidation and threats of takeover. This invitation is an important step in strengthening our relationship, but in the face of Communist China’s aggression, much more needs to be done. I continue to call on the White House and Congress to support my Taiwan Invasion Prevention Act and to clearly demonstrate our commitment to protecting Taiwan.” Read more HERE.

Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio to POTUS: We Strongly Disagree With Your Decision to Delist the FARC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization

Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio sent a letter to President Joe Biden regarding the State Department’s decision to remove the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) from the State Department’s list of designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). Maintaining the FARC’s designation as a FTO is critical to ensuring that American taxpayer dollars do not fund terrorists abroad and that American funding does not support these terrorists’ political sympathizers who seek to undermine a democratic Colombia and its strong bipartisan partnership with the United States.

In their letter the Senators noted, “[t]his is a step backwards for the stability and security of Colombia and will only provide these terrorists and their political sympathizers with enhanced capability, financial resources, and perceived international legitimacy to destabilize our closest ally in the region.” Read more HERE. Lea en español AQUÍ.

Sen. Rick Scott Joins Sen. Marco Rubio and Colleagues in Letter to SecDef Warning Against the Use of DoD Resources to Harass Service Members That Oppose Leftist Ideology

Senator Rick Scott joined Senator Marco Rubio and their Republican colleagues in sending a letter to U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to express their concern that Countering Extremism Working Group (CEWG), recently established by the U.S. Department of Defense, could be used to “target service members who voice opposition to woke, Leftist ideology under the guise of protecting our ‘national security interest.’” Read more from Senator Rubio’s office HERE.

Senator Rick Scott announced that he will donate his third quarter Senate salary to the Hardee Help Center in Wauchula, the Palm Beach County Food Bank in Lake Worth and the Second Harvest of the Big Bend located in Tallahassee.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Today, my wife, Ann, and I are proud to support three great organizations that are working day-in and day-out to help Florida families with food and resources they may need in the face of hardship. This holiday season, I encourage all Floridians follow the lead of these incredible organizations and their hardworking volunteers by giving back to your communities, helping your neighbors and supporting one another in any way we can.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott, Sen. Josh Hawley and Colleagues Introduce Bill to Move Forward with Preclearance Facility in Taiwan

Senator Rick Scott joined Senators Josh Hawley, John Cornyn, Tommy Tuberville, Mike Braun, Thom Tillis and Cindy Hyde-Smith to introduce the Taiwan Preclearance Act to would affirm Taiwan’s importance in the Indo-Pacific and require a report on establishing a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance facility in Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Taiwan is one of our most valued and strategic partners in the Asia-Pacific. The Taiwan Preclearance Act will strengthen our economic and security partnership with Taipei, bolster the safety and security of all travelers and increase collaboration with the Taiwanese government. In the face of the growing threat of Communist China, we must be doing everything we can to enhance our relationship with our partners in region, and this bill is a great step in the right direction.” Read more from Senator Josh Hawley’s office HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott Joins Sen. Rubio and Bipartisan Colleagues to Introduce Legislation Extending NASA’s Enhanced Use Leasing Authority

Senator Rick Scott joined Senator Marco Rubio and bipartisan colleagues to introduce the NASA Enhanced Use Leasing Extension Act of 2021. This legislation would extend NASA’s enhanced use lease (EUL) authority for two years so that NASA may lease underutilized areas on its properties to other federal agencies, academic institution, state and local governments, and private partners in space exploration, which would raise revenue for the agency.

Senator Rick Scott said, “As the home to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida has made countless and invaluable contributions to America’s superiority in space. The NASA Enhanced Use Leasing Extension Act of 2021 will strengthen our global competitiveness in the space industry, help maintain facilities and improve mission effectiveness. I urge my colleagues to support this good bill.” Read more from Senator Rubio’s office HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott in El Nuevo Herald: Democracy in Latin American is Key to Defeating Communist China’s Influence

Senator Rick Scott wrote an op-ed for El Nuevo Herald highlighting the importance of freedom and democracy in Cuba and across Latin America in combatting the influence of Communist China in the region. While the Biden administration and the international community remain silent and refuse to act, Senator Scott continues to proudly stand with the people of Cuba demonstrating in the streets against the oppression of the illegitimate communist Cuban regime and all throughout Latin America fighting for freedom.

In the op-edSenator Rick Scott wrote, “The fight for freedom in Cuba is far from over. On November 15th, the Cuban people on the island attempted to peacefully demonstrate in the streets of Cuba. The regime responded by mobilizing a repressive apparatus and instituted an island-wide state of siege to prevent demonstrations. The dictatorship’s state security apparatus was out in full force. However, in over sixty cities around the world Cubans gathered to denounce the brutality and oppression of the six decades of illegitimate, communist rule.

In the past four months, President Biden could have used this important time and the momentum both on the island and on the world stage to work on breaking through the regime’s information blockage and reconnect the Cuban people with critical access to internet and cellular service. Again, the administration failed.

The illegitimate Cuban regime is so comfortable with Biden’s failed leadership that the dictatorship’s Foreign Minister summoned diplomats in Havana to warn them that the Cuban regime would not tolerate the November 15th demonstrations. The message from the regime was clear: the international community better stand-down as we crack-down on demonstrators. With few exceptions, the international community continues to look the other way in the face of this blatant oppression, but Communist China is more than ready to take advantage of the opening. Last month, Cuba became the newest partner in Communist China’s “Belt and Road Initiative” which promises to upgrade the island’s energy infrastructure.

We need to be clear about what is really happening in Latin American when it comes to Communist China. General Secretary Xi knows that every dollar of the more than $140 billion the Chinese government has so far lent to nations in Latin America buys economic influence. And Communist China’s economic influence translates into electoral influence. This is gravely concerning given the Chinese government’s partnerships across Latin America, especially in large nations like Colombia and Brazil where Communist China has replaced the United States as the largest trading partner.

We cannot falter in this moment when clear-eyed American leadership in Latin America is desperately needed. That’s why I and Congressman Byron Donalds have introduced the Denying Earnings to the Military Oligarchy in Cuba and Restricting Activities of the Cuban Intelligence Apparatus (DEMOCRACIA) Act and I have joined Senator Marco Rubio to introduce the Protecting Against Tyrants by Restoring Internet Access and Yielding Vital Interconnectivity in Designated Areas (PATRIA Y VIDA) Act.

Ultimately, only democracy and freedom will protect the brave people of these nations from dangerous outside influence and the tyranny of continued communist rule. Until a new day of freedom is achieved, we cannot let up in our fight…”

Federal Association for Insurance Reform Urges Congress to Pass Flood Insurance Bills Sponsored by Sen. Rick Scott

Florida-based insurance association, the Federal Association for Insurance Reform (FAIR), wrote an opinion piece for The Invading Sea, a collaboration of 26 Florida news organizations focused on environmental issues and climate change, urging Congress to pass Senator Rick Scott’s recently introduced Flood Insurance Consumer Choice Act and Flood Insurance Transparency Act. With the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) broken and buried in debt, Senator Scott is fighting for reforms to ensure that the private flood insurance market has quality, affordable options for families, especially in coastal areas prone to flooding like Florida.

In the piece, President of the Federal Association for Insurance Reform Paul Henderson, wrote, “Flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States. Flood-related disasters have cost more than $850 billion in damages and losses since 2000, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts.

To make matters worse, the frequency and severity of flood-related events are predicted to grow over the next several decades. In fact, a recent report from the First Street Foundation estimates that in just 30 years the average estimated annual loss from flooding in the United States will be $32.3 billion a year.

Unfortunately, consumers are often hindered from realizing these potential benefits or from even knowing their potential flood risk. One barrier is the NFIP’s ‘continuous coverage’ provision that requires a property to keep an active NFIP policy to remain eligible for certain premium discounts.

Another issue is the lack of publicly available data about an individual property’s flood risk and flood claims history. In many states, consumers can purchase a property without any access to the property’s history of flooding.

Increased transparency would allow potential home buyers to make more informed decisions and increase awareness about the importance of buying flood insurance. To address these two problems, Florida Sen. Rick Scott recently introduced the Flood Insurance Consumer Choice Act and the Flood Insurance Transparency Act. FAIR urges Congress to pass these reforms.

All that being said, the NFIP is an incredibly important program that provides valuable flood mapping data, building code requirements, and is a lifeline to its millions of policyholders. But, the NFIP alone cannot cover all of the U.S. flood risk. It must work with the emerging private flood insurance market.

Thus, FAIR urges Congress to consider ways, such as Scott’s bills, to support the private flood insurance market.”
