US Senator Rick Scott’s Week in Review 10/22/2021

Image

This week, Senator Rick Scott continued his fight against President Joe Biden’s proposal for unconstitutional vaccine mandates on America’s private businesses. For weeks, Senator Scott has been warning that Biden’s vaccine mandates will drive Americans out of their jobs, further fueling the devastating supply chain and inflation crises plaguing American families. This week, the United States Federal Reserve confirmed Senator Scott’s concerns in its latest report, showing that vaccine mandates were widely cited by businesses as the reason for low labor supply and hiring and retention issues.

Senator Scott also spoke on the Senate floor this week to request unanimous consent on four separate bills which would prevent the federal government from mandating vaccines for eligible Americans to receive federal benefits including Social Security and Social Security disability checks, Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP, public housing and other assistance from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), food stamps, the federal Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food assistance program and free-and-reduced lunch. Senate Democrats blocked the passage of each of these bills.

Earlier this month, Senator Scott wrote an op-ed for Fox Business and spoke on the Senate floor on how the Biden administration’s latest vaccine mandate for private companies will further cause workforce shortages, continue to cripple supply chains, and worsen the ongoing inflation crisis that is to blame for the increase of prices on everyday goods.

Senator Scott continues to push for passage of his Prevent Unconstitutional Vaccine Mandates for Interstate Commerce Act which will protect the privacy of Americans’ personal health information and prevent the government from dictating what is best for Americans and their families in order to go to work.

Sen. Rick Scott: Mayorkas has Failed the American People and Should Resign Immediately

In a roundtable event focused on the Biden administration’s horrific and self-created border crisis, Senator Rick Scott called for the resignation of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Joined by Senators Ron Johnson and Rob Portman, Senator Scott heard from Americans who have dealt with Biden’s border crisis firsthand, including law enforcement, former Customs and Border Protection leadership and the parents of children who fell victim to this deadly crisis. Today’s roundtable comes on the same day as reporting from the Washington Post showed that under President Biden’s failed leadership, apprehensions at the southern border have reached an all-time record and jumped to nearly 1.7 million in Fiscal Year 2021.

Senator Rick Scott said, “This border crisis is not just a Texas or Arizona problem, every state is a border state when the savage cartels are given a free pass to human traffic and smuggle lethal drugs into this country. Every American is put in harm’s way because of the Biden administration’s dangerous policies that have wreaked havoc across our nation. But, there are more people responsible for this growing disaster besides the occupants of the White House and Senate Democrats who have refused to hold a proper hearing on this crisis—and they must all be held accountable. The Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, has refused to do his job and has completely abdicated his duty to the country and the millions of American lives he swore to protect. It should start with Mayorkas. He has failed Americans—he should resign TODAY. He cannot and has not led DHS through this crisis effectively. He’s actively making this crisis worse.” See more from Senator Rick Scott’s opening statement and remarks HERE and HERE or below.

Senators Rick Scott & Kyrsten Sinema Introduce Legislation to Crack Down on Drug and Human Trafficking

Senators Rick Scott and Kyrsten Sinema introduced the bipartisan Extending Limits of U.S. Customs Waters Act to extend the customs waters territory of the United States from 12 to 24 nautical miles from the baselines of the United States, allowing U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) and the U.S. Coast Guard the jurisdiction necessary to keep American families safe from drug and human traffickers. Law enforcement across the nation have reported how the growing drug crisis is hurting families. According to CBP data, double the amount of fentanyl has been brought into the country compared to last year – killing thousands of Americans in part due to growing trafficking activity in surrounding waters.

Senator Rick Scott said, “The U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations keeps families in Florida and around our nation safe by patrolling the beaches, shore waters and maritime territory, conducting search and rescue operations and intercepting vessels transporting illegal drugs and the victims of human trafficking. Our state is safe and secure because of the hard work and sacrifices our brave men and women in uniform make to defend our coastline. My bill, the Extending U.S. Customs Waters Act will extend the United States’ customs waters territory to help ensure our Coast Guard has the jurisdiction and authority needed to cut down on drug and human trafficking so that families everywhere remain safe. I am thankful for the bipartisan support and I urge all my colleagues to support this important bill.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott: Empower Patients, Help Americans Access Affordable Quality Health Care

At the request of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Rick Scott gave testimony regarding the federal government’s role in America’s health care system.

Senator Rick Scott has been a strong advocate for greater access to quality, affordable health care. As Governor of Florida, he led numerous initiatives to provide more information to Floridians about the real prices of health care services and protect patients from price gouging, including legislation to prohibit surprise medical bills. In the Senate, Senator Scott continues working on solutions to help lower health care costs and improve access to care and price transparency for every American. Watch Senator Rick Scott’s testimony HERE or in the video below.

Sen. Rick Scott Applauds Senate Passage of Bill to Allow Unspent COVID Relief Dollars to Pay Down America’s $30 Trillion Federal Debt

The Senate passed the State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial Fiscal Recovery, Infrastructure, and Disaster Relief Flexibility Act, led by Senators John Cornyn and Alex Padilla to make several categories of infrastructure investments and disaster relief eligible for unspent COVID-19 relief dollars. This legislation also included Senator Rick Scott’s proposal to allow these dollars to be used to pay down the nation’s $30 trillion federal debt crisis.

Earlier this year, Senator Scott and Senator Cynthia Lummis introduced the Pay Down the Debt Act to allow any federal grant funds refused by a fiscally responsible state government to be used instead to reduce our nearly $30 trillion national debt and put the nation back on an economically stable path.

Senator Rick Scott said, “With an unsustainable $30 trillion federal debt crisis maxing out America’s credit card, it is critical that every single tax dollar is spent in the best interests of American families. I’ve been saying for months that if states and local communities don’t need the billions of dollars in federal funding they received for COVID relief, these tax dollars should absolutely be used to pay down the U.S. debt, settle our past-due bills and put this country back on a path to economic freedom. I’m glad this common sense provision was unanimously approved in the U.S. Senate and look forward to this important legislation quickly passing in the House of Representatives.” Read more from Senator Cornyn’s office HERE.

Democrats Block Sen. Rick Scott’s Legislation to Prevent Vaccine Mandates for Government Assistance

Senator Rick Scott spoke on the Senate floor to request unanimous consent on four separate bills which would prevent the federal government from mandating vaccines for eligible Americans to receive Social Security and Social Security disability checks, Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP, public housing and other assistance from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and food stamps, the federal Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food assistance program and free-and-reduced lunch. Senate Democrats blocked the passage of each of these bills.

Senator Rick Scott said, “As recently as July, the Biden administration said it wouldn’t issue federal vaccine mandates. Of course, as President Biden has done again and again, he broke his word. Not only are Democrats now eager to issue unconstitutional vaccine mandates, but today, they went even further and blocked my bills to say that the vaccine shouldn’t be a requirement for critical government services that help our most vulnerable and at-need American families. Democrats today said they are willing to revoke your social security checks, take away health care for the poor, elderly and vulnerable children, kick folks out of their homes and deny needed food assistance – all because of a personal medical decision to not receive a vaccine. Growing up, I watched my mom struggle and we lived in public housing. I can’t imagine someone from the federal government coming to my mom and saying that if she didn’t get a shot, she was going to be homeless. It’s insane.

“I had COVID and I got the vaccine. I encourage everyone to talk with their doctor and consider being vaccinated, but getting the vaccine is a choice everyone gets to make for themselves. It is NOT the role of the federal government to say ‘comply with unconstitutional mandates or go without Social Security, health care, housing or food benefits.’ What we are seeing under the Biden administration is gross overreach by the federal government across the board. From vaccine mandates to massive intrusion by the IRS into our bank accounts. It’s not what the American people want and I won’t stand for it.” See more in the videos HEREHEREHERE and HERE or below.

Sen. Rick Scott: Federal Reserve Proves Biden’s Unconstitutional Vaccine Mandates are Killing Jobs

Following the Federal Reserve publishing its latest Beige Book report for October 2021, Senator Rick Scott released the following statement. In its report, the Federal Reserve found that vaccine mandates were widely cited by businesses as the reason for low labor supply and hiring and retention issues. The report states, “Transportation and technology firms saw particularly low labor supply, while many retail, hospitality, and manufacturing firms cut hours or production because they did not have enough workers. Firms reported high turnover, as workers left for other jobs or retired. Child-care issues and vaccine mandates were widely cited as contributing to the problem, along with COVID-related absences.” For weeks, Senator Scott has called for President Joe Biden to reverse his decision to implement unconstitutional vaccine mandates on America’s private businesses.

Senator Rick Scott said, “The Federal Reserve admitted what I have been warning about for weeks: Joe Biden’s unconstitutional vaccine mandates are causing higher turnover, driving Americans out of their jobs and further fueling the devastating supply chain and inflation crises plaguing American families. I had COVID and got the vaccine. While I encourage others to do the same, that was my personal choice. Getting the vaccine should be the personal choice of every American and government has no right to force this decision on them. Everything Joe Biden does makes things worse for families and businesses in Florida and across America. President Biden must rescind his proposed unconstitutional vaccine mandate. I’ll never stop fighting to stop Biden’s fear-mongering, socialist madness.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott: Senate Democrats’ Spending Bills Highlight Biden’s Socialist Priorities

After Senate Democrats released the text of their spending bills, Senator Rick Scott issued the following statement highlighting the failures of these proposed budgets which attack pro-life protections and lay bare the socialist priorities of the Biden administration and Congressional Democrats which are devastating for Florida families.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Senate Democrats seem to be all in for big government and big debt and have shown they’ll do anything to fund a radical progressive wish list. Democrats in Washington continue down a path of radical tax-and-spend policies that waste American taxpayer dollars and fuel an already raging inflation crisis. The proposals introduced by Senate Democrats will have disastrous impacts for families in Florida and across the nation. These reckless proposals halt construction of the border wall at our southern border, even though we’ve already paid for the materials and arrests at the border have soared to an all-time high. They raise the budget of the inefficient and ineffective IRS by 14% so they can spy on the bank accounts of nearly every American. And they remove bipartisan pro-life protections, like the Hyde Amendment, which have been in place for more than four decades to prohibit taxpayer dollars from funding abortions, in a blatant attempt to force Floridians to fund the widespread destruction of life.

“Shockingly, as threats from Communist China and other dangerous regimes grow more serious, Democrats want to shortchange our military, failing to give it enough funding to even keep up with their inflation crisis. While Democrats want to increase domestic spending by 13% to fund their liberal priorities, they only propose a 5% increase for defense spending – again, not even enough to keep up with inflation. There’s no question that this proposal is completely unfit for serious consideration. At a time when American families, especially those on low and fixed incomes, are suffering from inflation there is no time to play games and pretend we have unlimited funds to pay for a reckless, socialist tax-and-spending spree.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott Presents John S. McCain Freedom Award to the Cuban People

100 days after pro-democracy demonstrations began in Cuba, Senator Rick Scott presented the 2021 John S. McCain Freedom Award to the People of Cuba at the International Republican Institute (IRI) 2021 Freedom Award Celebration. Willy Chirino, Cuban Grammy Award-winning artist, accepted the award on behalf of the Cuban people. Since 1995, the International Republican Institute’s Freedom Award Celebration has honored individuals whose commitment to the advancement of democracy, freedom and human liberty has created opportunity for millions of people around the world. As IRI’s highest honor, the Freedom Award exemplifies the goals and accomplishments of strengthening democracy for a safer, more secure world.

Senator Rick Scott said, “This year, we have seen the Cuban people organize and rise up fearlessly against the oppressive, illegitimate communist Cuban regime. 100 days ago, in a show of unity and strength, demonstrators began marching in the streets and voicing their opposition against communist rule. Castro and Díaz-Canel are terrified of their people’s resolve, and are doing everything they can to silence them. Even as oppression and censorship increases, the Cuban people continue to bravely fight for freedom. Their devotion to democracy is an inspiration for all of us, and I am honored to present the 2021 John S. McCain Freedom Award to the Cuban people in recognition of their bravery, resilience and strength. We won’t stop fighting until there is a new day of freedom on the island.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott to Secretary Blinken: Investigate PAHO for Human Trafficking Charges

Senator Rick Scott sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken requesting information about the Biden administration’s efforts to investigate charges into the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Last year, a federal judge ruled PAHO could be held liable in a human-trafficking lawsuit brought by Cubans who were victims of human trafficking. In 2018, four Cuban doctors, who were trafficked by the communist Cuban regime, sued PAHO for arranging fraudulent “medical missions” during which physicians are subjected to restricted movements, unwarranted surveillance and loss of income which is stolen from them by the regime. PAHO is an arm of the United Nations and receives the majority of its funding from the United States. Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott Joins Rubio and Colleagues to Introduce the Clean Water Allotment Modernization Act

Senator Rick Scott joined Senator Marco Rubio and colleagues to introduce the bipartisan Clean Water Allotment Modernization Act to update the current funding formula used to allocate state funding to ensure quality waterways across the nation.

Senator Rick Scott said, “This legislation will help ensure Florida receives the funding it deserves to preserve our waterways, environment and natural resources. The current funding formula hasn’t been updated since 1987, yet Florida’s population has grown by nearly 10 million since then. It’s time to make this important change. People come from around the world to enjoy our state’s natural beauty, and I will always work to protect our environment for generations to come.” Read more from Senator Marco Rubio’s office HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott to HHS Inspector General: American Families Demand Answers on COVID-19 Origins

Senator Rick Scott wrote a letter to Christi Grimm, Principal Deputy Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), demanding answers on what the Biden administration knows regarding the origins of COVID-19. Senator Scott is also requesting the status of any Office of Inspector General (OIG) investigation into COVID origins and the role that HHS, or its agencies, may have had. Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott Applauds Local Leaders Rejecting Unspent COVID Funding

Senator Rick Scott released the below statement applauding fiscally-responsible local leaders following reports that they are rejecting billions in unused, unneeded funding received in the COVID-19 relief packages passed by Congress. This also follows a report that states have only spent 2.5% of their initial allotment and large cities have spent 8.5%, after claiming to be in desperate need of this funding just months ago.

In March, Senator Scott sent an open letter to governors and mayors across the United States urging them to commit to reject any federal funding in excess of their federally-reimbursable COVID-19 related expenses so this funding can be used to pay down the federal debt. Senator Scott and Senator Cynthia Lummis also introduced the Pay Down the Debt Act to allow any federal grant funds refused by a fiscally responsible state government to be used instead to reduce our nearly $30 trillion national debt.

Senator Rick Scott said, “America’s credit card is maxed out, and this dangerous cycle of taxing and spending that Washington Democrats are obsessed with is not sustainable. I applaud the fiscally responsible local leaders across America who are rejecting the federal government’s reckless spending and handouts they don’t need. This is exactly why Congress must immediately pass my and Senator Lummis’ Pay Down the Debt Act so that these tax dollars can be used to pay down the debt, pay our past-due bills and put this country back on a path to economic freedom.” Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott Issues Weekly Update on Biden’s Inflation Crisis

Senator Rick Scott released a weekly update on his actions to address America’s debt crisis and rising inflation, and continued his call for President Joe Biden reverse his decision to implement unconstitutional vaccine mandates on America’s private businesses that’s killing the U.S. economy and further fueling rising inflation. This week, following a recent report by the Federal Reserve confirming Senator Scott’s concerns that vaccine mandates were widely cited by businesses as the reason for low labor supply and hiring and retention issues, the Senator released the statement below.

Sen. Rick Scott in the Financial Times: Biden Should Turn to the Florida Playbook

Senator Rick Scott wrote a letter to the editor of the Financial Times in response to a recent editorialon how Democrats should accept a “lighter” version of Biden and Democrats’ multi-trillion dollar tax-and-spending spree that pushes a massive expansion of government through deficit spending. In his letter, Senator Scott argues that if Democrats actually care about doing what’s best for Americans, they’d follow Florida’s playbook: Cut taxes, get Americans back to work and stop their insane socialist policies and deficit spending.

In the letter, Senator Rick Scott wrote, “There’s a popular saying that’s especially true in Washington: garbage in, garbage out. It’s a perfect fit for President Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” package.

“While every president has the right to push their own agenda, Biden has shown that to fulfil his liberal wishlist, he is willing to bury our nation in a debt so massive that we will never be able to pay it off.

“Too many American families, especially poor families like mine growing up, are suffering from rising costs due to inflation. We don’t need a lighter bill. We need a hard reset.

Biden and his Democrat pals in Congress should take the proven playbook we used in Florida when I was governor. Cut taxes, get Americans back to work, stop with the insane mandates on families and businesses and boost the economy so we can pay down the debt and fund our priorities without increasing deficits.”
